    Job Description

    The Port of San Francisco is seeking TWO COLLEGE STUDENT INTERNS to support its occupational health and safety programs.  The assignment includes performing field work to perform site visits and maintain safety supplies and equipment; meeting with employees to follow-up on safety concerns; maintaining various databases such as hearing conservation, medical monitoring appointments, and safety data sheets; assisting with the coordination of safety and health training programs; reviewing and updating training content and employee training files; participating in ergonomic assessments; conducting basic safety inspections; assisting in the ordering and tracking of safety purchases; assisting with industrial hygiene monitoring; developing draft Codes of Safe Practices for maintenance operations; and performing other duties as required.

    NOTEOne of the two positions will be assigned to Port of San Francisco Human Resources for a period to assist with COVID workplace requirements.

    SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties may include sustained physical effort including but not limited to continuous walking, bending and climbing ladders in performing work in the field and from vessels with potential exposure to health and safety hazards.  Ability to travel to various locations throughout San Francisco.

    • Applicants must be enrolled in a program at an accredited community college or university leading to a degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, kinesiology, ergonomics, nursing or related fields.  
    • Applicants must have completed at least 48 semester units or 72 quarter units by the application filing deadline.

    INTERNS MUST MAINTAIN ENROLLMENT AT AN ACCREDITED COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY FOR CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT AS A OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY INTERN.

    The IDEAL CANDIDATE for this position has an interest or knowledge of occupational safety and health; ability to work with a variety of people in team settings, and work independently with appropriate supervision.

    Additional Information

    APPOINTMENT TYPE: This is a Temporary Exempt (TEX) as-needed appointment not to exceed 1040 hours. Exempt appointees serve at the Appointing Officer’s discretion.
