    Job Description

    ABOUT TEAM: 

    The Department of Technology's Public Safety division operates and maintains several critical systems such as 911 Radio, Fiber, Engineering alert, crime prevention camera, burglar alarm, fire alarm call box and other similar systems.

    POSITION SUMMARY: 

    Under general supervision, during an assigned shift, incumbent is responsible for dispatching fire apparatus and other equipment in cases of fire or emergencies; and performs related duties as required. Requires responsibility for maintaining routine records of fire calls and movement of fire apparatus and similar emergency equipment. Requires good knowledge of: the operation and maintenance of fire alarm and telegraph equipment; city streets and fire company locations; the American Morse code. Requires ability to: follow oral and written instruction; maintain ordinary operating records; make quick decisions and use good judgement in handling of fire alarms and the dispatching of appropriate equipment. Requires skill in the operation of electronic test equipment, voltmeters, telegraph key, fire alarm and radio dispatching equipment.

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Receives reports of fires and other public safety emergencies and dispatches appropriate supervisor through the use of telephone radio and video communication.

    • Receives box alarms and transfers to San Francisco fire Department radio dispatch; transmits extra alarms or requests for special apparatuses.

    • Makes regular tests of all firebox and alarm circuits; uses line testing equipment in conjunction with two-way radio for detecting the location of circuit faults; dispatches repair staff to locate and repair breakdowns in fire alarm circuits.

    • Maintains station log of all activities during assigned shift.

    • Monitors audio and video feedback from burglar and fire alarm devices on City property and facilities for police, fire, and ambulatory dispatch as needed; monitors various video camera system circuits and reports faults and emergencies.

    • Receives trouble complaints for street lighting and traffic signals and dispatches appropriate staff.

    • Monitors and reports video camera system function and intrusions

    • Monitors City Radio Communications Sites throughout the shift and reports potential problems immediately to an assigned supervisor and appropriate chain of command.

    • Responds to all Public Safety Emergency dispatch requests at City buildings, including Elevator emergencies.

    • Assist with the maintenance and support of all City of San Francisco WIFI initiatives at various locations.

    • Carry out all assigned City communications support assignments as directed by the immediate supervisor.

    • Support all new communications initiatives to enhance Public Safety; including the CCSF's Outdoor Public Warning System.

    • Support Fire Alarm Dispatch 24/7, (Mornings/Afternoons/Nights), including all Holidays.

    • Conduct all communications with CCSF Residents, Police, Fire, and technical staff, in a professional, courteous manner.

    JOB APPOINTMENT TYPE: 

    The Department of Technology is seeking to fill one (1) temporary-exempt - CAT16, full-time position.  This temporary-exempt full-time position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process. The successful candidate shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. This position has an anticipated duration of up to six (6) months.

    WORK LOCATION: 

    Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the Department of Technology, 1011 Turk Street. However, there maybe situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.

    NATURE OF WORK: 

    Candidate must be willing to work a 40- hour week as determined by the department. Travel within San Francisco may be required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

    EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience in a public contact position providing or soliciting information by telephone or radio (such as positions with heavy public contact in answering complaints, telephone operations, or dispatching work);

    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: Possession of a valid California driver license.

    NOTE:

    1. MEDICAL TESTING: Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must successfully pass the TB testing process.

    2. SECURITY CLEARANCES AND BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS: Positions in this classification may require that successful candidates who become eligible for appointment may be required to go through a background investigation to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment in this classification. Factors considered in the investigation may include employment history, use of illegal/controlled substances. Reasons for rejection based on this investigation may include, but not limited to: applicable convictions, repeated or serious violations of the law, inability to accept supervision, inability to follow rules and regulations, falsification of application materials and/or other relevant factors. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination.

    COMPENSATION:  $41.1875 - $50.0625 hourly
