  • Responsibilities

    Job Description

    Under general direction, manages a section by planning, assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of a group of survey technicians and professional personnel engaged in land survey activities or the processing of map applications and the monument preservation and maintenance program. Performs other related duties as required.

    Essential Duties:

    • Supervises the work of survey technicians and an administrative analyst by planning, organizing, assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of subordinates, including completing performance evaluations for subordinates and administering disciplinary procedures when necessary.
    • Plans and organizes surveying work by determining the logistics for conducting each survey;
    • Setting and adhering to project deadlines; assigning responsibilities to subordinates;
    • Managing ongoing work to ensure that surveys and map work provide the necessary and desired information and documentation;
    • Supervises the maintenance of official records, maps, and survey reports and the preparation of related reports;
    • Coordinates with other city agencies on requests for service, time schedules, and cost estimates;
    • Assists the Section Manager of Subdivision in making revisions of programs, objectives, and goals;
    • Develops, interprets, and coordinates surveying and map processing policy and methods for the department;
    • Processes and checks subdivision map applications, plans, and survey records prepared by survey technicians for technical and record information accuracy with respect to the California Subdivision Map Act and the San Francisco Subdivision Codes and Regulations;
    • Writes and checks boundary legal descriptions and performs other professional duties which require a licensed land surveyor;
    • Manages horizontal and vertical control systems which may include use of Global Positioning System (GPS) monumentation/documentation program;
    • Implements and maintains Geographic Information System (GIS) base map system; Updates codes and regulations and reviews proposed bills and budget, cost, and fee assessments;
    • Makes regular contacts with the general public, other departments, contractors, private surveyors, and outside organizations relative to municipal mapping and survey practices and procedures;
    • Prepares legislation to change official street legislation, approve subdivision maps, and refers same to the Board of Supervisors;
    • Routinely represents the department at public hearings and before the Board of Supervisors and various commissions.
    • Drives a City vehicle to work sites and meetings when necessary;
    • Performs related duties as required.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    1. Four years of experience supervising survey parties.

    2. Possession of a valid California Professional Land Surveyor License, or a valid California Civil Engineer license (issued in 1981 or before).

    3. Possession of a valid California driver license (at least Class C).

    Note:  At least one year of experience in county subdivision mapping is required for the position located in the Bureau of Street Use and Mapping at the Department of Public Works in addition to the Minimum Qualifications above.

    Additional Information

    SALARY: $129,636 - $157,612 annually

    APPOINTMENT TYPE: Permanent- Exempt (PEX). The Office of City Administrator - Department of Public Works has an opening for an exempt appointment in San Francisco. The position is excluded by the charter from competitive civil service examination process. The successful candidate shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. This position has an anticipated duration of up to three (3) years.
