    Job Description

    Under the supervision of the Director of Policy and Communications for San Francisco Public Works, the Public Information Officer will perform a variety of duties requiring strong communication and organizational skills related to the Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response Bond Program and the Public Health and Safety Bond (construction), as well as other bond-funded capital improvement projects involving the Public Works design and construction management teams.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    ·       Write and edit mandated bond reports

    ·       Create and update bond program webpages

    ·       Prepare talking points and background briefings for department managers and elected officials, including the mayor and members of the Board of Supervisors

    ·       Craft fact sheets and press releases for bond projects

    ·       Produce events for bond project milestones, such as groundbreaking, topping-off and ribbon-cutting ceremonies

    ·       Working with project managers, prepares responses to inquiries from residents, businesses, the press and elected officials

    ·       Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    EDUCATION: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public relations, journalism, English, mass communications, public administration, public policy or a related field.

    EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of professional experience in public affairs, public information, editorial, newspaper, magazine, radio, television, public relations social media, digital engagement, advertising or similar work involving collection and dissemination of news and information wherein the preparation or direction of informational material for mass media on the development of public information program was a major part of the position.

    SUBSTITUTION:

    1. Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of 2 years). Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

    2. Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in public relations, journalism, mass communications or a closely related field may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

    Additional Information

    SALARY: $82,810 - $100,646 annually

    APPOINTMENT TYPE: Permanent-Exempt. The San Francisco Public Works Department has an opening for an exempt appointment in San Francisco. The position is excluded by the Charter from competitive civil service examination process. The successful candidate shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. This position has an anticipated duration of up to three (3) years.
