    Job Description

    THE INTERNSHIP IS OPEN TO STUDENTS WHO WILL BE RETURNING TO SCHOOL IN FALL 2023. THE 5380 CLASSIFICATION IS OPEN TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WITH NO PRIOR ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE.

    Engineering interns within the Street Division are responsible for developing design alternatives for transportation projects; performing field visits; preparing traffic control device work orders; drafting in AutoCAD; preparing striping drawings for official records; estimating project costs for traffic striping, signage, signal, and civil work scope; analyzing signal timing; reviewing construction work zones and site plans; supporting public outreach; and preparing legislation. Responsibilities will vary depending on the team.

    Engineering teams within the Streets Division include: o    Traffic Routing o    Operations o    Livable Streets o    Transit Engineering o    Street Use, Development, and Signals (SUDS)

    The internship program offers weekly seminars and field trips for interns to learn about various parts of the Agency. Attendance is mandatory at these events. Interns will also participate in Pecha Kucha presentations at the end of the summer.

    The internship follows a 40-hour workweek, generally between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday to Friday. Work outside these hours may be required for fieldwork, outreach events, etc. Interns may be eligible for a flexible work schedule, subject to supervisor and division approval. Interns may work up to 1,040 hours in a fiscal year.

    Qualifications

    Desired skills include critical thinking, attention to detail, communication, and teamwork. Desired software experience includes Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and/or Synchro. Students are encouraged to apply even if they do not have prior experience with these programs.

    Additional Information

    Interns follow the same telecommuting requirements as all City employees, with a requirement to work onsite at least three days per week (subject to change). Work at the office, fieldwork, outreach events, and field trips all count toward the onsite work requirement. 

    Intern salaries is $33.2750 per hour.

    Interns will also have free access to Muni for the duration of their internship.

    CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:  All City and County of San Francisco employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. Someone is fully vaccinated when 14 days have passed since they received the final dose of a two-shot vaccine or a dose of a one-shot vaccine. Any new hire must present proof of full vaccination status to be appointed. Any new hire who will be routinely assigned or occasionally enter High-Risk Settings, must provide proof of having received a COVID-19 booster vaccine by March 1, 2022, or once eligible.
