    Job Description

    GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION Under general nursing and medical direction, utilizing standardized procedures, the Nurse Practitioner functions within an organized system for the delivery of health care in association with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team and performs specialized nurse practitioner duties in clinical settings.

    The Nurse Practitioner (NP) coordinates and implements aspects of trauma care (medical and surgical) of the injured and acute care surgery patients. The NP provides effective health care in maintaining collaborative and consultative relationship with all members of the interdisciplinary care team while providing excellent and timely care to the patients admitted to ZSFG.  In addition, the NP provides continuity in attending outpatient clinics for follow up.

    The essential functions include, but are not limited to:

    • Provides routine preventative and continuity care to adult and/or pediatric patients; this may include complete history and physical examinations;

    • Orders diagnostic tests, which may include laboratory tests, X-rays and other imaging, E.K.G.s, and other disease or condition specific diagnostic tests;

    • Identifies and manages patients with unstable chronic diseases appropriate to clinical specialty;

    • Provides urgent care to acutely ill patients, including providing care to both trauma and general surgery patients in the Inpatient and Outpatient setting;

    • Acute care planning for patients in an inpatient setting;

    • Assesses and diagnosis, develops treatment plans, and furnishes medications;

    • Counsels and educates patients, and collaborates with healthcare team; orients and educates medical students and surgical house-staff to the Trauma Service guidelines and protocols;

    • Consults with physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of unstable and complex patient conditions;

    • Documents medical records, and adheres to patient privacy;

    • Participates in staff meetings and conferences regarding patient care, as well as quality improvement/control activities; AND

    The 2328 Nurse Practitioner performs other related duties as assigned/required.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    1.  LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND 

    2.  LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND 

    3.  LICENSE: Possession of a current medication furnishing license issued by the California Board of Registered Nurses; AND 

    4.  EDUCATION: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited college or university; AND 

    5.  CERTIFICATION: Possession of national board certification, or eligibility, as a Nurse Practitioner issued by one of the following recognized national certifying body or organization: 

      A.  American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)   B.  American Nurses Association – American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)    C.  Pediatric Nursing Certification Board    D.  National Certification Corporation (NCC) for the Women’s Health Care and Neonatal Nursing Specialties    E.  American Association of Critical Care Nurses 

    6.  SPECIALTY AREA REQUIREMENTS: (TRAUMA)

      A. Specialization as an Acute Care NP or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP; AND   B. Possession of a valid Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association 

    Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.  

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS: The above minimum qualifications reflect special conditions associated with the position(s) to be filled. They may differ from the standard minimum qualifications associated with this classification.  In addition to the listed minimum qualifications and special conditions, some positions may require other special conditions, including but not limited to Bilingual Proficiency in a variety of languages depending upon the department's bilingual needs.  Only those eligible candidates who pass the bilingual proficiency test will be considered for bilingual positions.  Applicants must indicate on the application form the language(s) in which they claim proficiency.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The following desirable qualifications are applicable to Adult Medicine NP positions working on the Inpatient Medical-Surgical Units at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center:

    • One year of experience in critical care • Experience in an acute care hospital (a hospital which provides 24-hour inpatient care, including the following basic services: Medical, Nursing, Surgical, Anesthesia, Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy and Dietary Services)

    The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE EVALUATION/SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE (SQ) (WEIGHT: 100%): The SQ will be sent to those qualified candidates who demonstrate to meet the minimum qualifications. Candidates will be required to submit the completed SQ in the time frame indicated and responses on the SQ cannot be changed once submitted. A passing score must be achieved on the SQ in order to be placed on the Eligible List.  Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the SQ.  After the confidential eligible list/score report is adopted, the department may administer additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision. The SQ is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position. All relevant experience, education and/or training must be included in the application to be reviewed during the scoring process. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.
