    Job Description

    Under general direction, the Public Relations Assistant prepares and distributes public information materials through social media posts, memoranda, and other written and digital forms. As a member of the Recruitment Unit, the PR Assistant will work on social media and marketing campaigns and develop recruitment materials to source and attract candidates from a variety of sources.

    The essential duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

    • Conducts online research and compiles reports on social media platforms utilized for recruiting communication, public outreach and stakeholder engagement
    • Advises on strategic planning and implementation of social media campaigns to enhance public engagement and outreach outcomes for recruitment activities
    • Assists and coordinates with recruiting advertising campaigns, promotions, special events, and public information programs.
    • Leads the development of recruiting print materials such as flyers, articles, newsletters, and publications.
    • Posts content for the website and social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Nextdoor, and LinkedIn.
    • Assists with community engagement and SFPD brand management on social media.
    • Creates presentations for external groups and organizations.
    • Helps maintain positive media and public relations.
    • Maintains databases and lists of relevant groups and committees and generates computerized reports.
    • Responds to public inquiries via email, phone.

    Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    EDUCATION: Requires possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public relations, journalism, English, mass communications, public administration, public policy, or a related field.

    • Substitution: Professional experience in public affairs, public information, editorial, newspaper, magazine, radio, television, public relations, social media, digital engagement, advertising or similar work involving collection and dissemination of news and information may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of 2 years). Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

    BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Prior to employment with the San Francisco Police Department, a thorough background investigation will be conducted to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment. The investigation may include, but not be limited to: criminal history records, driving records, drug/alcohol screening, and other related employment and personal history records. Reasons for rejection may include use of  controlled substances and alcohol, felony conviction, repeated or serious violations of the law, inability to work with co-workers, inability to accept supervision, inability to follow rules and regulations or other relevant factors. Candidates may be required to undergo  drug/alcohol screening, and must clear Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprinting. Criminal records will be carefully reviewed; candidates who do not report their complete criminal records on their applications will be disqualified. Applicants will be fingerprinted.

    San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) job applicants would need to provide official verification consistent with the City's COVID-19 policy they are "Fully Vaccinated/Full Vaccination" before they can advance to the required Background Process phase of the recruitment process. "Fully Vaccinated" and "Full Vaccination" mean two weeks after completing the entire recommended series of vaccination (usually one or two doses) with a vaccine authorized to prevent COVID-19 by the FDA, including by way of an emergency use authorization, or by the World Health Organization (WHO). For example, an individual would be fully vaccinated at least two weeks after receiving a second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine or two weeks after receiving the single dose of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. This SFPD specific COVID-19 vaccination applicant requirement supersedes the City's general COVID-19 vaccination new hire requirement.
