  • Responsibilities

    Job Description

    Essential Duties:

    Under the supervision of an Aquatic Supervisor, Swimming Instructor/Lifeguard or a regular lifeguard the lifeguard trainee will assist with the following:

    1. Assist in patrolling and monitoring pool activities, facility patrons and swimmers to prevent accidents; identifying people in distress or those in danger.

    2. Assist in conducting rescue operations; performing lifesaving techniques; assisting swimmers in distress and rescuing swimmers in danger; assist with extricating victims out of the water; calling for emergency assistance; performing first aid resuscitative measures when necessary.

    3. Communicating with facility patrons; cautioning swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforcing pool rules and regulations; maintaining order in and around the pool.

    4. Assist in maintaining the aquatic facility by inspecting and observing the pool area, lobby, change rooms and deck for safety and cleanliness; preforming general pool facility maintenance duties including cleaning and disinfecting pool, lobby, change rooms and deck; may take and record water quality samples in the absence of a supervisor. Assist with preparing the facility for various aquatic events; handling and storing equipment and materials when not in use.

    5. Collect revenue and fees for facility use and participation in facility activities and events; greet and check-in facility guests.

    6. Provide customer service; share general information regarding facility operations, programs, and schedules.

    7. Prepare incident and accident reports as necessary.

    8. Other related duties as assigned.

    ** Minimum Qualifications**

    1. At least 16 years of age*

    ** AND** one of the following:

    1. Possession of a current lifeguard certificate (American Red Cross, YMCA Lifeguard, Ellis and Associates, or equivalent) and First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer ( ** Please scan and attach the required certification(s) to your application. Failure to submit the required certification(s) will result in disqualification from the selection process. **

    OR

    2. Ability to successfully pass and complete all three components of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training pre-course skill test:

    • 300-yard continuous swim using front crawl or breaststroke with rhythmic breathing
    • 2-minute tread using legs only
    • retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, surface and swim 20 yds with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds

    *Qualified applicants who are in high school, will be required to obtain a valid work permit if selected.

    Additional Information

    ** 9910 Lifeguard Academy Curriculum**

    1. Candidates who **DO **possess a current lifeguard certificate (American Red Cross, YMCA Lifeguard, Ellis and Associates, or equivalent) and First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification will:

    • Practice and review Lifeguarding skills
    • Participate in teambuilding activities
    • Review SFRP Aquatics Employee Manuals
    • Practice SFRP Aquatics Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
    • Participate in quarterly all-staff aquatic in-service trainings
    • Shadow guard with 3210 Lifeguard
    • Obtain Administering Emergency Oxygen Certification
    • Gain lifeguarding experience at various SFRP pools

    2. Candidates who DO NOT possess a current lifeguard certificate (American Red Cross, YMCA Lifeguard, Ellis and Associates, or equivalent) and First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification will:

    • Participate in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course including the following components: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Emergency Oxygen Administration

    **Please note: Applicants without a current lifeguard certificate are anticipated to begin the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course in Fall 2024. **

    We are also offering free practice session(s) to practice the lifeguard skills before taking the performance swimming skills test. Lifeguards will be available to answer questions and to demonstrate skills. Practice sessions will include:

    • 300-yard continuous swim using front crawl or breaststroke with rhythmic breathing
    • 2-minute tread using legs only
    • Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds:
      • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (Swim goggles are not allowed for this portion)
      • Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
      • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface in order to breathe (or to get a breath).
      • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

    Successful completion of the American Lifeguard Training Program is required to continue with the 9910 Lifeguard Trainee Program

    ** Selection Procedures**
    The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

    1. These positions work as-needed, and are temporary exempt, as-needed/seasonal appointments without city employee benefits.

    2. Exempt employees under Charter category 16 are considered to be “at will” and serve at the discretion of the General Manager.

    3. Employees may only be scheduled to work certain quarters/semesters depending on the operational needs of the Department.

    4. Work assignments may vary depending on the needs of the Department. Some positions may require working rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

    5. These as-needed/seasonal, temporary exempt seasonal appointments cannot exceed six (6) months or 1,040 hours (note: an internal departmental threshold of 960 hours will be applied).

    6. Successful candidates may NOT be guaranteed specific job placements, work site locations or fixed hours.

    7. The Department may determine that some candidates must call for daily assignments based on business operational needs.
