The internship will run for 8 weeks with a start date of June 4th (negotiable). About the Durham Innovation Team (i-team): The i-team seeks solutions to greater shared prosperity in Durham by drawing upon human centered design, behavioral economics, policy analysis, and quantitative and qualitative research. Our current priority area set by the mayor and city manager focuses on identifying ways to increase economic opportunity for residents with criminal records. During the summer of 2018, the i-team will also begin research on a new, yet-to-be-determined, priority area. To learn more about the i-team, please visit our website at www.durhamiteam.org. The i-team is based out of the City's Office of Performance and Innovation and is made possible through the support of Bloomberg Philanthropies, which supports i-teams in over 25 cities. The i-team is seeking interns in the following areas: data analyst, designer, and policy researcher. We will hire 1 to 2 summer interns. If you have skillsets in 2 or more areas and interested in a hybrid internship that includes, for example, both policy research and design, please indicate that on your application. Duties/Responsibilities: For data analyst internship * Conducting data analysis in support of the i-team's priority areas. * Identifying, collecting, and analyzing new sources of data relevant to advancing the i-team's understanding of its priority area. * Creating compelling data visualizations that help tell the story of the i-team's work. * Tracking and collecting data to assess the effectiveness of the i-team's prototypes. For design internship * Designing additional content for our website and other platforms to help tell our story (www.durhamiteam.org)

    • Designing presentation materials. * Designing prototypes of i-team ideas, including, where appropriate, low-fidelity web-based applications (optional based on intern skillset) * Creating journey maps and other visuals to understand and improve service delivery. * Conducting qualitative research. For research internship * Conducting research in support of the i-team's priority areas. * Documenting information about service providers to aid in the creation of a detailed map of organizations supporting reentry in Durham and an analysis of gaps in our current services. * Identifying and documenting novel approaches and best practices relevant to our priority area. * Collecting qualitative data by conducting interviews with key stakeholders. Minimum Qualifications & Experience: For data analyst internship * Must be a current student in a bachelor's (or advanced degree) program * Strong MS Excel skills * Experience with STATA, R, or another statistical software package For design internship * Must be a current student in a bachelor's (or advanced degree) program * Strong Adobe Creative Cloud skills. * Experience with data visualization tools For policy research internship * Must be a current student in a bachelor's (or advanced degree) program * Strong MS Excel skills Additional Preferred Skills: * Interest in the i-team's current priority area * Familiarity with human centered design, behavioral economics or quantitative methods * Interest in local government * Candidates currently in an advanced degree program
