(Hours may vary) Monday through Friday Internship Duration: June 2018 August 2018 The City of Durham Department of Solid Waste Management is seeking a summer intern to assist with the Compost Pilot Planning Program. We are looking for individuals who want to make an impact by supporting the city's sustainability goals, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and divert food and yard waste from landfill. The City of Durham is also seeking to design a pilot program to introduce composting for local compost agencies and residents. The Department of Solid Waste Management seeks an intern over the summer to support its research, planning and coordination for the compost project. This internship will provide a mix of opportunity for learning about location government, local policies and procedures, and state policies and procedures. Duties/Responsibilities: * Research best practices in municipal composting policies and practices; * Serve as a liaison with potential composting suppliers; * Attend a variety of meetings; * Engage with various departments in the municipality and community agencies to coordinate the pilot program. Minimum Qualifications & Experience: * Must be currently enrolled info a 2-year or 4-year college program in the environmental field at an accredited university or college which requires internship experience for graduation; * Candidate must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills. Additional Preferred Skills: * Assist in creating, promoting, distribution of flyers, brochures and other materials; * Experience in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
