    Equipment Mechanic Salary $12.15 Hourly Location Las Cruces, NM Job Type Full-time Regular Department Utilities Job Number K017 01-19 LD Closing 1/17/2019 11:59 PM Mountain Nature of Work Assists in the repair and maintenance of a variety of wastewater treatment plant equipment . Position involves standby status and required overtime during weekends, holidays and nights. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position functions 15% inside and 85% outside with exposure to all weather conditions; exposure to mechanical, explosive and electrical hazards; potential burns associated with methane gas, large pumps and motors; chemicals, gas burners, acids/basis and hydrogen sulfide; exposure to odors, chemical fumes and sewage mists high in bacteria and odor. Work will include confined spaces and use of SCBA equipment. All protective clothing and devices are required, including SCBA, face shields, eye protectors, hard hat, steel toe shoes, chemical protection aprons, hearing protection, gloves and any other deemed necessary by the plant or safety officer. Position requires heavy physical work, including climbing, crawling, kneeling, stooping and working in confined, restrictive environments; visual and color acuity for fine motor/pump alignment and working in proximity to live electrical wiring. Ability to hear engine/motor sounds in problem identification. Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds; push/pull gas mixing compressors. Ability to work in confined spaces; wear and use SCBA equipment, and pass annual confined-space physical. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies. Full-time; regular; union-represented position Duties and Responsibilities Participates in the repair and maintenance of all plant equipment, including pumps, motors, sludge centrifuge, valves, piping, Genset, blowers, compressors and related equipment using standard and specialized hand tools. Performs routine maintenance such as lubricating bearings; replacing seals, gaskets, springs, and gears. Checks and calibrates plant flow meters to ensure accuracy of measurements. Performs minor maintenance on plant buildings. Assists plant staff in housekeeping and grounds keeping of the plant facilities and odor control site. Participates in the cross-training program regarding facility operations and the odor control program. Attends required job-related training. Minimum Qualifications Equivalent to a high school diploma PLUS one year of experience in wastewater plant maintenance. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy. Valid driver's license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies. Level I Wastewater Certification desirable. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic knowledge of: Wastewater treatment plant processes and equipment. Ability to: Maintain accurate records; ensure accuracy of measurements; communicate effectively; perform basic reading, writing and mathematical calculations; maintain constant alertness and concentration; work in confined spaces, wear and use SCBA equipment, and pass annual confined-space physical; work well with others as a team.
