Job Description
The Environmental Justice Fellow will work closely with OOS’ Environmental Justice Team and the PEJAC. This position will support OOS’ environmental justice program objectives, including:
· Increasing public and internal understanding of environmental justice,
· Strengthening the capacity of the PEJAC to identify policy and practice reforms that centralize the leadership of those most impacted by environmental injustice and the climate crisis,
· Building the capacity of residents and CBOs to lead and implement environmental justice initiatives,
· Equipping departments with the necessary tools and resources to guide decision-making that advances environmental justice and promoting adoption,
· Strengthening local, regional, state and federal relationships to collaboratively advance a holistic approach to environmental injustice that moves impacted communities from surviving to thriving.
This is a part-time, hourly position that runs through June 2024. The position reports to the Program Strategist for Environmental Justice. Up to two fellows will be hired. High school and college students are encouraged to apply. The number of hours per week is negotiable; candidates should communicate their capacity and expectations during the interview process. The position start date is negotiable either late Fall 2023 or early 2024.
Essential Functions:
Administrative Support for the Philadelphia Environmental Justice Advisory Commission (PEJAC):
· Attend virtual and in-person PEJAC monthly and work group meetings and other convenings as needs or requests arise
· Provide administrative support, including scheduling and meeting documentation, to PEJAC leadership and work group leads
· Support the processing of stipend payments for PEJAC members
· Conduct and/or support research under the guidance of PEJAC membership in furtherance of PEJAC priorities
Grants Management Assistance for the Community Resilience & Environmental Justice Fund:
· Support database management and data entry
· Support application analysis and the development of summary reports
· Assist with event planning related to Fund promotion, applicant or grantee technical assistance, and/or grantee celebrations and networking
Education and Communication:
· Develop content for social media and other outreach tools to help advance the work of the Environmental Justice Team and PEJAC
· Conduct and/or support research under the guidance of the Environmental Justice Team or other OOS team leads to help advance office priorities
Other Duties:
· Provide administrative support to the OOS Environmental Justice Team, including meeting scheduling and documentation
· Steward relationships with impacted communities to ensure activities are centered in their experiences and perspectives and align with their strategic priorities
· Performs other tasks and responsibilities as assigned, the focus of activities may change depending on the needs of the agency

· An understanding of issues relating to climate change and resilience, public health, environmental hazards, and resource distribution and their points of intersection with social justice and civil rights concerns
· Ability to visually and creatively communicate information in a manner that informs, motivates and/or calls recipients to action
· Commitment to equitable engagement with diverse populations
· Passion for environmental justice, public health, and/or social justice
· High emotional intelligence and empathy
· Skilled at working independently and as a member of a team
Qualifications
· Completed or in-progress high school diploma
· Preference will be given to candidates with lived experience of environmental injustice.
