    Job Description

    The Philadelphia Historical Commission is seeking a part-time, remote work, paid historic preservation intern for the fall 2022 semester, to assist with DPD’s Cultural Resources Survey Pilot. The intern will assist PHC staff in developing a community-led process for identifying, surveying, and documenting the stories and spaces that represent Philadelphia’s rich and varied past.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Primary tasks will involve generating content for and updating the survey website, designing outreach strategies for explaining/introducing the survey project to specific, targeted groups, general research into cultural resources throughout the city. Some initial field survey work and attendance at community events may be required, if possible. Work will be remote and work hours are generally flexible to accommodate academic schedules. Philadelphia residency is not required.

    COMPETENCIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Applicants should have a strong interest in community engagement, history, documentation and storytelling. Experience researching and documenting the histories of marginalized and underserved populations is a plus.

    Qualifications

    Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate level program in historic preservation, city planning, architectural history, American history, African American studies, public history, American studies, urban studies, archaeology, museum studies, or related program.
