    Job Description

    This is specialized work functioning as a personal aide to a member of The Civil Trial Division, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, judiciary. Important aspects of the job involve assistance to courtroom operations, ensuring dignity is provided in the courtroom and accompanying the appointing judge to all public functions and performing various other duties as assigned. An employee in this class is directly responsible to and serves at the discretion of the appointing judge.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    THE FOLLOWING DUTIES ARE NORMAL FOR THIS POSITION.  THESE ARE NOT TO BE CONSTRUED AS EXCLUSIVE OR ALL-INCLUSIVE.  OTHER DUTIES MAY BE REQUIRED AND ASSIGNED.

    • Actively participates in courtroom operations; remains in the courtroom at all times while court is in session unless specifically instructed by the appointing judge.
    • The functions of role will be primarily focused on heavy research, writing, and very policy oriented.
    • Knowledge of the techniques and processes of legal research.
    • Assists with researching legal sources for briefs or opinions based on statutory law, decisions and precedents of higher courts.
    • Searches for and studies legal records and documents to obtain data applicable to cases under consideration.
    • Considerable knowledge of the components and functions of the justice system.
    • The candidate will demonstrate strong research and writing skills, as well as organizational skills.
    • Assists judicial law clerk in setting up court matters; files as required court documents; ensures that case files are appropriate.
    • Escorts judge through corridors of courthouse to and from court; ensures doors leading to chambers and robing rooms are locked at all times.
    • Performs related duties as required.

    Qualifications

    • Ability to learn and apply, within a reasonable period of time, the components and functions of civil courtroom proceedings.
    • Ability to learn non-judicial, civil trial procedures, rules and regulations required to facilitate court proceedings.
    • Ability to follow written and oral directions and to communicate effectively.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the members of the judiciary, jurors, attorneys, associates, employees and the general public.

     

    REQUIREMENTS:

     

    1.       Graduate of an accredited law school (current 3Ls are eligible to apply).

    2.       Demonstrated commitment and experience beyond civil coursework is highly desired.

    3.       City of Philadelphia residency required within one year of employment and maintain residency throughout your employment.

    4.       Strong legal research and writing skills; attention to detail; organizational skills.

    5.       Ability to perform the essential functions and work in the environment for the position.

    SALARY: $39,541 - $43,333 (G14)
