    Job Description

    This is entry level protective services and investigative work maintaining security in a court installation during normal business hours at the court installation. An employee of this class provides for the general protection of property on an assigned shift in a court building or other facility. Work normally includes patrolling the facility, taking reports concerning missing or stolen property, maintaining various logs, checking identification, and dealing with emergency situations involving injury, illness, bomb threats, etc. This position includes contact with the public and court clientele involved in potentially volatile situations.

    Essential Functions

    ** The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.**

    • Provides security and general protection of property in a court building or other facility during the day, evening and/or weekend hours. Makes regular rounds throughout assigned post.
    • Investigates acts of vandalism or theft and assists law enforcement officials on investigations as necessary.
    • Prepares and submits reports on infractions of laws, regulations, or rules that occur on the grounds or within the building and incidents of alleged injuries which security guard witnesses.
    • Prepares and submits reports on tour activities, as well as alleged incidents, illnesses, and injuries communicated to them by Sheriff Deputies, court employees, and other building users.
    • Enforces security rules and regulations.
    • Answers routine questions from the public. Directs persons to offices, courtrooms, or other facilities.
    • Quells disturbances by speaking to, evicting or segregating individuals. Notifies superiors, sheriffs, or police if further action is required.
    • Performs assigned functions pursuant to the facility Emergency Action Plan.

    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

    Standard public area, courtroom, and clerical office conditions.

    Direct contact with diverse court clientele, employees, contractors, system partners, and others.

    Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Working knowledge of the facility security rules, regulations, and policies.
    • Some knowledge of the methods and problems involved in protecting and safeguarding a municipal installation against theft, vandalism, and sabotage.
    • Some knowledge and understanding of general police methods in dealing with crowds.
    • Ability to meet approved minimal physical standards.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
    • Ability to learn a variety of security duties within an established training period.
    • Ability and willingness to explicitly follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
    • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

    Working hours are 40 hours per week. This is a full-time, in person position with the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania.

    REQUIREMENTS

    1. High school diploma or equivalent.
    2. One year of experience in military or civilian law enforcement work, or security work in a plant or institutional setting.

    OR

    1. Equivalent combinations of training and experience which provide the characteristics required to perform the essential functions of the class may substitute for those listed.
    2. Successful completion of a qualifying examination after submission of application.
    3. City residency required within one year from date of hire and must be maintained for duration of employment.
    4. Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
    5. Covid-19 vaccination recommended.

    Salary Range: $35,211 - $38,209
