    Job Description

    The Watershed Field Services (WFS) group within in the Office of Watersheds conducts field and marine services for the purpose of providing environmental benefits to the Department and the City and which may be required by local, state, and federal regulations including permits and executive orders. The mission of the Watershed Field Services Group is to advocate for the protection of the environment and the enhancement of natural resources through field and water-based assessments and the implementation of cost-effective practices that improve the quality and aesthetics of our surrounding riverine and wetland systems.

    This internship position offers rare access to the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers aboard PWD’s Marine Vessels and will include hands-on involvement with Philadelphia’s waterways and environment to make them cleaner. This position may involve working alongside a team of engineers, environmental scientists, aquatic biologists, city planners, semi-skilled laborers and community members to achieve PWD’s vision. Duties are split roughly 60‐40 between field tasks and office work. Field task involves collecting data and conducting light-medium duty activities. Office work involves analyzing and interpreting the data (from WFS and other groups within PWD) to provide reports and analysis products for PWD.

    Candidate must be:

    • comfortable spending several hours outdoors, either aboard a small – medium marine vessel or at various wooded locations throughout the City during all weather conditions,
    • conducting light-medium duty activities (i.e., lifting up to 25 lbs), potentially getting wet and dirty
    • have basic computer and writing skills and be able to conduct tasks independently
    • have a valid driver’s license, be comfortable driving within city limits and possibly neighboring suburbs

    Meticulous and methodical record keeping skills are desired. Knowledge of or interest in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Access is a plus. Otherwise on the job training will be provided.

    • Available: Mainly Monday-Friday during normal business hours (~9am-5pm), although 1-3x /month position may require weekend (Sat 8am-3pm) and weekday evening hours (5-8pm)

    Pay Range: $13.16-16.64/hr.
