    Job Description

    This Recreation Specialty Instructor (RSI) will serve as a PlayMobile Associate working on a small team responsible for driving and maintaining the PPR PlayMobile vehicle, which contains playful learning tools for children.  Focusing primarily on PPR’s PlayStreets initiative, this position will drive the PlayMobile to various PlayStreets locations and will instruct and organize playful learning recreation activities as well as plan and schedule literacy enhanced recreation activities.  Additional locations, such as the Ben Franklin Parkway and Recreation Centers may also utilize PlayMobile services to support summer camps and other events.

    The successful candidate will be able to work outside in varied weather conditions and will possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

    Completion of a CPR and a First Aid program and possession of a current CPR and First Aid certification at the time of application and during tenure of employment

    This is Temporary/Seasonal Employment; Three (3) Months in Duration

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Drive the PlayMobile and set-up play tools and landscapes on PlayStreets, at Recreation Centers and in open spaces (e.g., Oval, Parkway, select PPR parks).
    • Initiates collaborative play with children as well as parents/caregivers.
    • Attend literacy and playful learning training from the Free Library of Philadelphia and Fab Youth Philly with Temple Infant Child Labs
    • Initiates play for groups of varying age levels, backgrounds, and interests; assists in the preparation of publicity for scheduled events.
    • Prepares records and reports on attendance, attitude, and progress of recreation activities.
    • Supports implementing literacy survey tool with children.      
    • Performs related work as required.
  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • High School Diploma or Equivalency (minimum)
    • 2 years experience caring for and supervising children in a childcare center, school location, recreation facility, or social service agency
    • Bachelor’s Degree in early childhood education or other degree with major coursework in education preferred
    • 2 years experience conducting and/or instructing classes or groups in early literacy
    • Experience inplayful learning and literacy-based play desirable
    • Valid PA Driver’s license

    COMPETENCIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in instructing groups of children or adults
    • Knowledge of public recreation objectives
    • Knowledge of Philadelphia neighborhoods
    • Ability to lift 50 lbs
    • Ability to organize, instruct, and motivate individuals and groups
    • Ability to maintain order among recreation and social groups
    • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with participants, associates, and the general public

    Additional Information

    PAY RANGE: $14.25 - $15.00 per hour
