    Job Description

    The Law Clerk position requires legal research, legal analysis, and drafting of memoranda and opinions relating to criminal cases pending in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Judge Kyriakakis is currently hiring one Law Clerk for a permanent position beginning in August/September 2023. Preference will be given to attorneys with experience in criminal law.

    By Order of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, effective September 1, 2005, all law clerks employed by judges of the courts of the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania are prohibited from appearing as counsel in the division/section of the court in which the judge by whom they are employed serves. Further, in courts which have no formally established divisions or sections, the law clerks are prohibited from appearing as counsel in the court itself.

    Essential Functions

    ** The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.**

    • Research legal sources for briefs or opinions based on statutory law, decisions, and precedents of higher courts.
    • Draft legal memoranda, orders, and opinions and analyzing substantive legal issues.
    • Searches for and studies legal records and documents to obtain data applicable to cases under consideration.
    • Maintains file on case documents and all related correspondence.

    Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a self-directed fashion.
    • Ability to learn and apply, within a reasonable period of time, the components and functions of criminal courtroom proceedings and related computer systems.
    • Ability to learn trial procedures, rules, and regulations required to facilitate court proceedings.
    • Ability to follow written and oral directions and to communicate effectively.

    ** ADDITIONAL PREFERNCES:**

    1. Interest in Criminal Law.
    2. Intellectual curiosity and flexibility.
    3. Experience in the latest version of Microsoft Word.
    4. Ability to synthesize large amounts of information into relevant parts, analyze with reference to relevant legal concepts, and present in a concise written document.
    5. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
    6. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.

    Work-Life

    Working hours are 40 hours per week. This is a full-time, in person position with the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    1. Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
    2. Membership of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is not a requirement for Law Clerk 1; however, if you are a current member of the Bar, you must be, and remain in, good standing.
    3. City of Philadelphia residency required within one year of employment and must be maintained throughout your employment.
    4. Successful completion of a criminal background investigation.
    5. Covid-19 Vaccination is recommended.

    Salary Range: $56,683 - $62,360
