Job Description

This position is part of PWD’s Apprenticeship Program.  Each apprenticeship starts with a 6-month period of temporary employment.  During this time, apprentices receive on-the-job and classroom training from experienced technicians.  Upon successful completion of the temporary employment period, the apprentice will become eligible to promote a permanent Civil Service title (Public Works Maintenance Trainee – 7H02).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Assists in repair and maintenance heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and related utility components
• Attends training to learn technical processes and manufacturer specifications
• Takes measurements and makes adjustments to equipment
• Learns to change filters, clean condensers, evaporator coils, and replace parts on refrigeration and HVAC systems
• Learns to operate HVAC tools and gauges
• Learns the correct pressures and temperatures of systems

COMPETENCIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Basic knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air condition such as that provided by a pre-apprenticeship, work-readiness, or vocational school program
• Familiarity with the proper use of hand tools, metering equipment, or standard computer software
• Basic knowledge of mathematics up to first year algebra
• Ability to read and write English

WORK-LIFE

Working hours are 37.5 hours per week, fully on-site.

Qualifications

• Education equivalent to completion of the 12th school grade
• Prior HVAC knowledge highly beneficial
• Position may require minor physical exertion such as walking, lifting, or climbing
• Valid PA driver’s license is required

Hourly Rate: $15.00
