    JOB SUMMARY:

    Under general supervision, is responsible for performing professional sanitarian services and inspection work in the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. Enforces public laws and regulations as part of an environmental sanitation program. Exercises no supervision. The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM13.2.  Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy.     ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Inspects food and drink establishments, including bakeries, public eating places, candy manufacturers, grocery stores, meat markets, food warehouses, and other miscellaneous food establishments.

    • Conducts miscellaneous inspections of facilities (i.e. ambulatory homes for the aged and shops) for compliance with pertinent regulations and recommends issuance or denial of permit to operate.

    • Inspects establishments and sites with regards to water, sewage, solid waste, swimming pools, industrial hygiene, and noise abatement.

    • Performs special and miscellaneous duties as required, including sampling of products, giving talks to groups, and completing sanitation surveys.

    • Conducts inspections of school buildings and facilities for hazards and any repairs needed.

    • Communicates environmental health information with the public and demonstrates sensitivity to people and their needs.

    • Performs detailed tasks concerned with rodent, fly, and mosquito control projects.

    • Prepares written reports on inspection findings; outlines any violation of regulations; recommends corrective measures to be taken or possible court action.

    • Investigates food poisoning outbreaks at the direction of supervisory personnel.

    • Performs certificate of occupancy inspections.

    • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.

    • This position requires a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License OR valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Use of your own personal vehicle may at time be required and proof of Liability Insurance will be required.

    • Must obtain registration as a Sanitarian-in-Training or Sanitarian in Texas within six (6) months of employment.

    • If assigned to Vector Control, must obtain a State Department of Agriculture Certification as a Certified Pest Control Application-non- commercial within six (6) months of employment.
