The work involved is generally investigative, regulatory, educational, and consultative in nature. Exercises no supervision. This position is a "grant funded" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason. Essential Job Functions * Interviews persons with communicable diseases to elicit contact and or suspect information. * Contacts physicians, hospitals, and medical laboratories to obtain patient information. * Provides current public health information. * Conducts field investigation on communicable disease contacts and suspects to refer for diagnosis and treatment. * Counsels communicable disease patients concerning risk reduction and behavior modification. * Performs both pretest and post test counseling of patients undergoing serological screening. * Serves as an education and information resource to the public on the control of communicable diseases. * Develops, coordinates, and presents public health educational activities for organizations and groups in the local community, to include the provision of educational materials and teaching aids. * Speaks before schools, PTA's, businesses, and other community groups on public health subjects. * Assumes primary responsibility for data handling, maintenance activities, and data reports for research studies, surveys, and audits. * Assists in serological surveys of high-risk groups and individuals for communicable diseases. * Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required. Job Requirements * Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with preferable coursework in Counseling, Health Education, Education, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or a related field. * One (1) year of experience in Counseling, Health Education, or a related field. * This position requires a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License OR valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Use of your own personal vehicle may at time be required and proof of Liability Insurance will be required. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Bilingual (English/Spanish). * Phlebotomy experience. * Strong communication skills. * Experience working with STD/HIV. * Outreach experience. * Experience working with medical professionals. * Ability to work with diverse clients with a variety of medical conditions and lifestyles.
