JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, is responsible for working with community-based organizations to implement violence prevention strategies. Stand Up SA (SUSA) is a coordinated strategy to resolve community tensions by employing skilled outreach workers who build relationships with youth and their families who have been impacted by gun violence and/or gangs. Their secondary goal is to reduce clients' bonds to gangs, to reduce gang-related conflict and violence, to support and assist youth and their families in accessing social and educational services, and to provide a positive adult example and mentoring to gang-involved youth. This position will provide supportive services to crime victims and their family members. The Outreach Worker is a mentor, life coach, positive role model, advocate, and mediator for gang-involved clients. The overall goal is to keep the peace and prevent further shootings and deaths. Working conditions are inside and outside with occasional exposure to extreme weather conditions, hostile people, and emergency situations. Exercises no supervision. The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM13.2. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy.
