Naturalist Resources Specialist 3- Watershed Volunteer Program Assistant Cleveland Metroparks 33 reviews - Parma, OH 44134 The Natural Resources Specialist 3 - Watershed Volunteer Assistant is a high-level, lead worker variable position which provides project leadership in day-to-day operations and project related natural resource management, i.e., maintenance and restoration, and/or research and monitoring in Cleveland Metroparks and northeastern Ohio. The Natural Resource Specialist 3 provides project leadership, and quality assurance for assigned technical projects. Perform as crew leaders, project coordinators, and manage projects with supervisor oversight. The Watershed Volunteer Assistant in particular provides administrative and technical support to day-to-day operations of the Watershed Volunteer Program. The Watershed Volunteer Assistant works with the Watershed Volunteer Coordinator to provide database management and reporting, monitoring and restoration project design, event coordination, volunteer recruitment and recognition, and communication with volunteers. The position also assists other Natural Resources Division monitoring and restoration projects as needed. Essential Functions: 1. Provides leadership as a crew leader and/or project coordinator to Natural Resources Division and other staff with: * Projects related to the maintenance and restoration of natural resources, including but not limited to tree planting, deer management, small mammal trapping, prescribed fire, invasive species management, stream and wetland restoration, storm water BMP maintenance, and the construction, placement, and maintenance of breeding bird nest boxes, and/or * Projects related to research and monitoring including data collection and the recording and maintenance of accurate and well-organized data files in written and electronic format for vegetation, aquatic resource, wetland or wildlife monitoring. 2. Develops or assists in the development of reports and maps, performs data entry, verification and analysis and makes presentation related to assigned projects when directed. 3. Safely operates and maintains equipment including but not limited to forestry measurement tools, portable data collectors, prescribed fire tools, chain saws, tractors, boats, and related equipment. 4. Manages volunteers through training, scheduling, and supervision as required by specific projects. 5. Assists in the daily coordination-related duties of the Watershed Volunteer Program. 6. Tracks and process volunteer requests and applications. 7. Performs data entry and material distribution duties on a daily basis. Identifies and maintains recruitment efforts. 8. Assists with tracking, scheduling and preparation of materials for volunteer trainings, projects and presentations. 9. Maintains ongoing and quarterly program evaluation and reporting. 10. Tracks volunteer progress towards Watershed Steward Certification and distributes recognition items promptly. 11. Coordinates with Volunteer Services as necessary. 12. Supports independent volunteer projects with training, logistics, etc. 13. Hosts learning opportunities, monitoring events, and restoration activities. 14. Responds to routine inquiries from volunteers and public. 15. Assists with marketing events and programs. 16. Represents Watershed Volunteer Program at community events. 17. Writes e-newsletter and communications to volunteers and partners. 18. Assists Natural Resources and other cooperating agency staff in other duties as apparent or assigned. 19. Continuously informs supervisor of progress and key issues. 20. Works in a safe and efficient manner, responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action, and promptly notifies supervisory personnel. 21. Oversees activities of volunteers and seasonals participating in management and research and monitoring projects and tracks their hours. 22. Performs related duties as apparent or assigned. * The Natural Resource Specialist 3 variable employee has significant progress towards an undergraduate degree in natural resources, natural sciences including: biology, geology, hydrology, forestry, wildlife management, environmental science, or related field, or a minimum of three years of experience in natural resources or field experience. Experience in a project leadership role preferred. * Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license under the laws of the State of Ohio. * Knowledge and practical outdoor work experience including plant, insect, mammal, fish or bird identification skills, farming, forestry, hydrology, aquatic ecology, civil engineering, GIS or a strong desire and aptitude to develop these skills. * For research related positions, knowledge and experience in research methods is desirable. * Ability to read maps, follow written directions, and navigate through forest or wetland areas.

Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings. * Demonstrated ability to work independently or as a member of a diverse team to achieve project goals. * Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with the public and Cleveland Metroparks staff. * Demonstrated experience and knowledge of natural resource conservation practices and procedures preferred. * Demonstrated ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays as needed. * Ability to work in adverse conditions including rain, high or low temperatures, high humidity, insects, and difficult terrain. * Ability to walk up to 8 miles daily through challenging terrain including heavy vegetation, wetlands, and steep slopes. * Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. * Proficient user of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. High degree of data entry proficiency and accuracy. Experience with a database management system. * Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including volunteers, partners, and the general public. * Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization. * Strong business acumen, including problem solving, vision, ability to manage multiple programs and meet deadlines, collaboration, leadership, decision making and ability to analyze diverse facts and develop clear and concise reports and recommendations. * Ability to work cooperatively with others.
