Department The mission of the Colorado Department of Public Safety is
engaged employees working together to provide diverse public safety
services to local communities and safeguard lives. The Department
consists of five Divisions: Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI),
Colorado State Patrol (CSP), Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ),
Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC), Division of Homeland
Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM). This position resides within
the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI). CBI provides law enforcement
services to local, state, and federal law enforcement and government
agencies, including managing statewide criminal justice information,
assisting with criminal investigations on request, conducting criminal
and civil background checks, and operating an internationally-accredited
forensic laboratory system. The units described below perform these
functions: * Forensic Services - provides forensic investigative
assistance to law enforcement agencies, including DNA casework, latent
analysis, firearm and toolmark analysis, drug chemistry analysis, crime
scene evidence processing, serology analysis, trace evidence analysis,
digital analysis, DNA database management, and toxicology analysis. *
Office of Professional Standards - develops national accreditation
standards for the CBI, standardizes policies and training, conducts
review and investigates complaints and allegations of misconduct, and
reports on CBI statistics and inspections. * Investigative Services -
provides critical investigative assistance to law enforcement agencies
on request for major crimes, gaming, complex fraud, fugitive sex
offenders, cold case homicides, and missing persons investigations. *
Identification Unit - serves as the state repository for criminal
history information, including finger data. * Crime Information
Management Unit (CIMU).- provides support services and ensures security
regulations are met by users of Colorado criminal justice information to
uphold and enforce the FBI standards. * Instant Criminal Background
Check Unit - serves as the state point of contact for background checks
on firearms purchases and conducts concealed handgun permit background
checks for sheriff's offices. Description of Job The Criminal
Investigators hired in the particular positions as Field Agents &
Narcotics Agents are a part of a work unit that exists to fulfill
statutory responsibility to provide major crimes investigations. The
position will also provide technical and investigative assistance to
local and state agencies upon request and has jurisdiction pertaining to
Colorado's Organized Crime Control Act and fugitive apprehension,
through cooperation with local, state. and federal agencies. The Field
Agentis responsible for conducting lengthy complex criminal
investigations including but not limited to homicide investigations,
arson investigations, serious assaults and other felony cases as
directed by the Office of the Governor and/or local/state law
enforcement agencies. The Narcotics Agentis responsible for all listed
as a field Agent (above) with added responsibility to fulfill statutory
requirements to provide an effective level of criminal enforcement and
intelligence support relative to the statutory enforcement of black
market marijuana investigations. The following are some of the duties
consistent with a Field and Narcotics Agent: * Evaluating, studying, and
analyzing numerous parts of information from crime scenes or witnesses
in order to fit together the pieces and find solutions to criminal
activities and/or developing plans for testing and evaluating evidence;
- Serving as an expert witness, taking charge of investigations by
directing, supervising, and coordinating state, federal and local law
enforcement agencies during investigations or crime scenes or in
criminal investigations; * conducting research to develop methods of
detecting criminals who use conventional or new means to commit crimes
in Colorado; * Analyzing and corroborating legal and Agency documents
and records in support of criminal investigations pertaining to complex
and organized crime activities; * Writing affidavits, warrants, case
filing and subpoenas for presentation to district attorneys, grand
juries and trial courts; * Collecting, analyzing and disseminating
criminal intelligence pertaining to known and suspected offenders by
recruiting and supervising informants and gathering information from
various sources; * other duties as assigned; Work Environment: * Agents
are needed in the following locations: * Montrose, CO * Durango, CO *
Denver to Colorado Spring location TBD * Statewide * Primarily 8:00 am
5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday * Approximately 50% spent in the
field, 50% spent in the office * Travel may be required during work
hours throughout Colorado/Metro Denver/Front Range * Occasional
overnight travel 5-10 times a year throughout Colorado * Required to
operate CDPS vehicles in a safe manner Minimum Qualifications,
Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights This experience
must be specifically documented on your application. Additional

from an accredited institution in any field AND * Two (2) years of
professional investigative experience (traffic, and/or security guard
duties do not correlate to the type of investigation experience
required) Preference will be given to candidates with prior
complex/major crime and narcotics experience. This professional
experience excludes training or internships. Substitutions: *
Professional investigative experience with a law enforcement agency may
substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required bachelor's degree
but not for the 2 years experience as required; Special Requirements *
This position requires unusual shift and travel demands for
investigations, training, and court testimony. Requires 24/7
availability to assist with investigations, including weekends and
holidays. Work may be conducted anywhere in the State of Colorado; *
POST certification is required at the time of application, or the
ability to reinstate or obtain POST certification prior to appointment;
- Applicant must be willing to be fingered, successfully pass a
polygraph, drug screen, psychological exam, and an extensive background
investigation to include criminal, financial, employment, and driving
history. If you have used any illegal drugs in the past three years, or
have been convicted of a felony or domestic violence, you will be
disqualified and will not be hired for this position; * Requires a valid
Colorado driver's license with no active restraints; * Special physical
requirements: vision, hearing, minimum upper body strength satisfied
through POST skills certification; * This position must be willing to
accept comp time in lieu of overtime, however, overtime may be paid from
time to time at the discretion of the appointing authority. NOTE: A
legible copy of your unofficial college transcript(s) or credential
evaluation report must be submitted with your application. Transcripts
from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be
assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential
evaluation service. Failure to provide a transcript or credential
