23, 2018. Intern II/III: This internship is for current college students
(graduate, undergraduate or associate) within Henrico Area Mental Health
& Developmental Services Prevention Services. This internship is for the
fall 2018 semester and it is for academic credit. Students will start on
or around August 20, 2018. Henrico County offers a variety of hands-on
internships performing a variety of responsible tasks relevant to the
assigned department. Internships may be available in many departments at

Henrico Prevention Services are open to college students pursuing a
degree in a field relevant to internship placement. Selection is
dependent on the qualification of the successful applicant and the needs
of the County for this placement. Desired Area of Study: Social
Sciences; Human Services, Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Health,
Nursing Desired Student: Associate, Bachelor, and Master Level Hours:
Flexible, evenings may be required depending on placement and curriculum
requirements Work Location: Interns will be assigned to Henrico Mental
Health with Prevention Services. Location varies based on placement.
Internship candidates will be interviewed by Prevention staff to ensure
placement is feasible for the student and the County/Agency. Students
may have the opportunity to work in any of the following areas. Please
identify within your cover letter the desired area of interest. A.
Merchant Educator Student will work with Henrico Prevention Coordinator
to implement a statewide initiative targeting local Henrico businesses
(i.e. gas stations, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.) that sell tobacco
products. The student will travel with Prevention Coordinator to
selected sites, complete store audits and deliver merchant education
materials to store employees/managers. B. Community Coalition Student
will work with the Henrico Too Smart 2 Start Coalition to provide
assistance to the coalition in addressing specific substance abuse
prevention and wellness promotion activities. The coalition partners
with the community to prevent/reduce substance use and other risky
behaviors among youth. Activities include participation in
community-level events, data collection and other activities that
support the mission of the coalition. C. Community-Based Programs
Student will work in an after-school program with at-risk youth in a
community setting. Activities include evidence-based programming,
academic support, and educational/recreational programs.
Knowledge/skills/abilities: The student can expect to gain general
knowledge, skills and abilities in the delivery of Prevention strategies
that include: * Work in community-based settings * Develop knowledge of
risk and protective factors in communities * Develop an understanding of
macro level interventions * Gain observation and data collection skills
- Deliver Prevention information to community stakeholders *
Evidence-based programs with youth Students should possess the
following: * Interest in Henrico Mental Health mission and values *
Interest in working in community-based settings * Strong attention to
detail * Technological literacy * Reliable transportation Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Excellent interpersonal skills,
including excellent oral and written communication skills with the
ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County
employees and citizens integral to the internship; * Excellent
organization and research skills with the ability to collect and
organize facts/tasks effectively; * Excellent attention to details; *
Excellent knowledge of and familiarity with computer systems with
demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer and common
software products (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point); * Ability to work
multitask and manage priorities; * Ability to work independently with
minimal supervision and as a part of a team; * Ability to meet assigned
deadlines. Internships are intended to provide the intern with basic
experiential exposure to a field of interest. The intern must bring a
strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and
be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive
training relevant to the assigned responsibilities and finish the
internship having gained basic experience in various aspects of the
operations of the assigned department as well as basic skills and
industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact.
Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern
to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a
professional environment and have opportunities to network with
department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.
Minimum Qualifications Education: Pursuing a graduate (master's) degree,
undergraduate or associate degree in a field relevant to internship; GPA
of 3.0 or better desired; Experience: Completion of college-level
program in relevant degree program; relevant job, volunteer or previous
internship experience; Or: Any equivalent combination education and
experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant
