THIS IS A FIRE DEPARTMENT POSITION ONLY. The is recruiting for who are involved in a variety of specialized programs and activities, and serve as lead workers. Specialty assignments include Plan Check, Special Events, and Public Education. Responsibilities require knowledge of various fire codes and ordinances, and may include review of construction plans for panic and life safety criteria; attendance and interaction at special events and in meetings as a knowledgeable representative of the Fire Department; and/or planning and presenting public education programs on fire and life safety. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Background: A successful background check is required prior to assignment. Work Hours: May occasionally require working overtime, weekends, and/or holidays for special events; positions are subject to on-call and overtime requirements on a regular basis. Travel: Travel within and outside the County may be required. A valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire and maintained throughout employment. Certifications: Must obtain CSFM Plans Examiner Certification within 12 months of hire, or may be demoted/terminated. Ultimately, incumbents are expected to obtain additional related and more advanced certifications, including CSFM Fire Inspector II. Fire/Arson Investigator Positions: Some positions may be assigned as Fire/Arson Investigators. Investigators are in safety positions and are members of the Fire Investigation/Law Enforcement unit, on a stand-by rotation for after hour's emergency response, and perform other emergency response functions depending on specific assignment. Assigned Fire Investigators must meet minimum qualifications as outlined in County Fire Directive 5410A for peace officers and shall meet and maintain all POST requirements. Successful candidates currently in safety positions may retain safety status as a member of the safety team. Minimum Requirements Must possess California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Certifications, Experience, and Education as follows: CERTIFICATES: Must possess CSFM Fire Inspector I Certification AND either Option A or Option B as follows: Option A: CSFM Plans Examiner Certification (or Plans Examiner 1A, 1B, & 1C course certificates). Option B: CSFM Fire Inspector II Certification (or Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C, & 2D course certificates). (Equivalent certificates may be considered: CSFM Fire Prevention Officer or CSFM Fire Prevention Specialist; or Fire Plans Examiner or Fire Prevention Specialist from Pro Board, NFPA, or DOD.) (Copies of qualifying Certifications must be attached.) --AND-- EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of paid work experience with a Fire Prevention Bureau, with the primary responsibility of performing fire prevention work through field inspections for fire and life safety, fire protection systems, building construction, hazardous materials, and other community safety concerns; experience must include working with plans and reading/interpreting/applying fire and building code requirements. --AND-- EDUCATION: Fifteen (15) semester (23 quarter) units in Fire Science, Fire Safety or related fields. Substitution: Possession of a degree in Fire Science or closely related field may substitute for up to 1 year of the required experience. NOTE: Ensure your work history clearly details qualifying experience in fire protection plan review, fire prevention-related inspections, public education activities, and experience with inspections or standby at special events as a fire life safety officer. An equivalent combination of the above may be considered. Desired Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess CSFM Fire Inspector I, II, and Plans Examiner Certifications, with extensive experience in Fire Codes and Ordinances, along with a related college degree. This well-prepared candidate will demonstrate excellent written communication skills and customer service communication skills, as demonstrated in providing education and program information to groups of citizens and students.
