LOCATION OF POSITIONS: Pine Island and Whalehead Stations, Corolla, North Carolina. 19 new positions will be available March 15, 2018. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent with vocational or technical school training as an Emergency Medical Technician- Basic/Advanced/Paramedic and firefighter. Firefighter II or equivalent required. Fire Apparatus Operator Certification or equivalent preferred. Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills for the job functions, knowledge and abilities may be substituted; and credentialed by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic/Advanced/Paramedic as outlined in 10A NCAC 13P .0502 or ability to obtain reciprocity. One year or more of Fire-EMS experience preferred. Firefighter Paramedics are required to have and maintain Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (CPR), or equivalent; Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support or PEPP. PHTLS must be obtained within one year of employment. Firefighter Basic/Advanced EMTs are required to have Basic Life Support Provider Healthcare Provider (CPR). JOB DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, performs skilled and technical work in operating an approved Fire Apparatus and Emergency Medical Service unit for the County Fire-Emergency Medical Services Department, rescuing victims and administering emergency medical care to patients on site and while in route to hospitals. Work involves responding to calls for all emergencies at the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons, and transporting persons to a medical facility. Performs in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and protocols approved by the local medical director at the NC credentialed level and must exercise considerable independent judgment to assess conditions of patients and administer appropriate medical treatment. Work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, noise, vibrations, exposure to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Due to the nature of the work, employee is exposed to human blood and is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. Participates in firefighting activities to include driving fire apparatus, operating fire department equipment, fighting fires and patient extrications. Assists volunteer fire departments. Must have the ability to work in Immediate Dangers to Life and Health (IDLH) environment for thirty minutes wearing approved firefighting PPE. Work is performed under the supervision of a Company Officer and is evaluated through peer review/quality management, observation, and public feedback and performance evaluation. NOTE: All positions have a physical demand requirement for Very Heavy Work. Must be able to exert in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 lbs. of force frequently and or 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including stretchers, stair chairs, backboards, ladders, various fire hoses, and extrication equipment. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle, including fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles. Requires the ability to maintain body equilibrium when bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, reaching and/or stretching arms, legs or other parts of body, and to physically maneuver over and/or upon varying terrain, surfaces or physical structures. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess valid motor vehicle operator license; Emergency vehicle operator certification or CEVO. NC residents must obtain DMV Class B Operators license within one year of employment. Maintain the privilege to practice within the Currituck County Fire EMS system; Successfully pass the Technical Scope of Practice evaluation at the level in which they operate. Completes required hours of Fire and EMS continuing education per year, Hazardous Material Awareness and Terrorism Level I. Successfully complete Incident Command System 100, 200 and the National Incident Management System 700 and 800. Completion of bloodborne pathogens and HIPAA compliance training. Employment drug test and criminal background check required of finalist applicant(s). Must also pass a National Fire Protection Associate (NFPA) 1582 physical as conditional offer of employment.
