    Supervisory General Engineer (Assistant Chief) Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration 4,028 reviews - Miami, FL $92,750 - $120,576 a year - Part-time As the Supervisory General Engineer (Assistant Chief), for the Engineering Service at the Miami VA Healthcare System, the incumbent must provide professional Engineering advice to practicing physicians, research investigators, and administrative staff. Advice and recommendations are made directly without advice of the Chief Engineer. The incumbent must know, understand, and support the policies and objectives of the Chief Engineer, and shares fully in the duties, responsibilities, and authorities of the Chief. Duties include but are not limited to: * Responsible for Engineering programs relating to all elements of Engineering and the hospital, including evaluations and other administrative duties. * Approves routine work orders and refers to the Chief Engineer unusual requests for alterations and improvements. * Studies, evaluates and recommends changes, which would improve all services within Engineering Service if within scope of funds and practicability. * Performs professional engineering duties as Resident Engineer when directed on construction of new facilities and/or to existing facilities. * Plans long-range maintenance and repair programs for utility plants and systems. * Plans and lays out work including installation of new equipment and/or replacement of equipment and systems, personal property and building structures. * Initiates, prepares and/or approves specifications and justifications for work required in Engineering Service and is the overall responsible authority for acceptance of equipment and materials to be used in planned programs. * Responsible for the maintenance and completion of changes to the yearly station Capital Asset Plan, and overviews other yearly submissions, such as NRM, Minor & Major Project Applications for funding. * Coordinates projects and special program with the Chief Engineer. * Uses "Project Management" tools to execute day-to-day responsibilities and duties. * Uses customer feedback data to plan, provide, and improve services. * Complete assignments individually, or as a team leader, involving a wide variety of duties, employing a broad range of fact finding and analytical techniques. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-13 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-12. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Education Requirement. Four-year Professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Professional registration. I possess a current registration as a professional engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Written Test. Evidence of having successfully passed the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination, or the written test required for professional registration, which is administered by the Boards of engineering Examiners in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Specified academic courses. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in "A". The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum. Related curriculum. Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, AND at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-12 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: * Provides professional, consultative expert advice and guidance to management on engineering problems and responsibilities involved in maintenance and improvement of buildings, grounds, utilities and building systems equipment. * Develops and manages engineering programs including the efficient and reliable operation of utility plants, the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and facilities. * Responsible for the service and Medical Center planning, programing, budgeting and general administration. * Interprets and applies engineering principles, specifications, engineering and architectural plans and drawings, VA regulations and directives necessary for the maintenance, alteration and repair of buildings, grounds and systems. Preferred Experience: Bachelor's Degree. Selective Placement Factor: Supervisory experience.
