Juvenile Detention Booking Officer Douglas County, NE 2 reviews - Omaha, NE $18.79 an hour Under the direction of the Douglas County Youth Center Superintendent, Admissions & Classification Supervisor or designee, the incumbent performs varied duties in the areas of admissions/booking and release, assessment, classification and placement of detainees at the Youth Center. Performs all duties in strict adherence to departmental policies and procedures, rules, regulations and security procedures. Essential Functions: Act as first point of contact when detainees are brought to the facility by law enforcement officers. Conduct search for contraband as dictated by policy and procedure. Conduct initial intake interview with the detainee. Review detainee's file, court order(s), nature of offense(s), previous criminal record, etc. Recommend classification to supervisor for final determination. Confer with supervisors in both routine and non-routine situations. Process detainees into the facility by entering pertinent information into the computer system. Photograph detainee (i.e., mug shot) using digital camera system. Fingerprint detainee by rolling fingerprints in ink; also fingerprint detainees using the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) in accordance with policy and procedure. Generate identification wristband. Conduct a preliminary medical and mental health screening. Observe the behavior, physical and mental condition of each admission. Determine if detainee has any medical conditions, is taking any medications, is in need of medical attention, etc. Recommend implementation of appropriate "watches" (e.g., suicide, medical, behavior) to supervisor. Administer Alco-Sensor test to detainees who appear to be under the influence of alcohol. Refer to supervisor for final determination on admission. Remove, inventory and secure all personal property (e.g., clothing, monies, jewelry) while in the presence of the detainee. Secure all property in designated holding area. Accept and process monies for relevant judicial bonds and fines. Issue appropriate receipts. Create detainee file (hard copy). Disseminate detainee information to designated personnel. Monitor population count for detainees within the facility and those scheduled outside of the facility (e.g., court appearances, medical appointments). Verify information with the printed census and the control room. Assure pertinent information is passed on to oncoming shifts. Maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement personnel, court personnel, attorneys, probation officers, social service agency representatives, parents/guardians and the general public. Respond to inquiries regarding respective detainee's status, bond information, scheduled court appearances, etc. within level of expertise. Update and maintain accurate records on detainees regarding classification and status change. Maintain disciplinary file on detainees. Prepare release paperwork for review by supervisor. Review release information thoroughly to ensure proper release of detainees; release his/her personal property accordingly Assist supervisors in emergency (e.g., behavior, medical, suicide) and crisis situations as directed; ensure control and security of detainees in booking area. As directed, attend training sessions, seminars and workshops to remain alert to current trends and developments in juvenile justice and detention. Other Duties and Responsibiities Prepare written reports and data as requested. Perform control room and escort functions as assigned. May relieve personnel assigned to oversee and supervise detainees in the units during breaks, meal periods, training sessions or as directed. Perform other related duties as assigned. Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements: High school graduation or the equivalency. Two years* of directly related experience in a detention or corrections setting. Experience working with adolescent youth preferred. Experience involving booking or classifying inmates/detainees strongly preferred. Completion of a pre-employment criminal records check conducted on a local and national level, a drug screening test and a physical assessment. Completion of all pre-employment criteria established by the Civil Service Commission including a drug screening test, back assessment and pre-employment physical assessment. Possession of a Class C permit to conduct Alco-Sensor breath testing desirable. Must complete Alco-Sensor training within first six months of employment. Current certification in Basic Life Support (CPR) preferred. Must complete CPR training within first three months of employment. NCIC/NCIS (National Crime Information Center/Nebraska Crime Information System) certification preferred. Knowledge of AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) desirable. Experience or training in personal computers, keyboarding and typing desirable. * Approved directly related education beyond high school in Criminal Justice or a directly related field may be substituted for the work experience requirement on a year-for-year basis. Juvenile Detention Booking Officers are required to physically engage detainees in order to protect the detainee, themselves, other officers, and other detainees. This may involve subduing and restraining one or more detainees who may have weapons. While calling for backup is advised, there are instances where the Officer is required to take action before assistance arrives. Incidents requiring physical intervention may arise as frequently as several times a day. While these incidents do not consume much time, they do require Officers to become and remain physically fit and not have medical conditions that pose a threat to themselves or others should the need for physical confrontation arise. An incumbent must also have the strength, endurance, agility and coordination to perform the essential functions of the job including self defense and detainee restraint. Incumbents must be willing and able to work any shift, including weekends, holidays, and overtime. Work involves the potential for contact with or exposure to blood borne pathogens or other body fluids and infectious materials. Work requires close interaction with offender populations and may be difficult or emotionally challenging when dealing with irate or verbally abusive detainees, their family members, or when dealing with critical situations. An incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers, control panels, radios, handcuffs, leg irons, locking/unlocking doors, alarms, and other equipment used to perform the essential functions of this job.
