only be available during these dates.) The Fresno County Library is
currently recruiting for Library Assistant I positions at various
branches throughout the County of Fresno. Library Assistants direct
patrons to proper location of library materials; research less complex
reference questions, process library material for patrons, provide
support to the librarians, and other library services within the San
Joaquin Valley Library System. Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area Branch
Libraries include: Betty Rodriguez Library, Central, Clovis, Fig Garden,
Gillis, Mosqueda, Politi, Pinedale, Senior Resource Center, Sunnyside,
Talking Book Library (San Pablo/Belmont), Community Book Mobile, West
Fresno, and Woodward Park. Library branches outside of the Fresno-Clovis
Metropolitan Area include: Auberry, Bear Mt., Big Creek, Fowler,
Kingsburg, Orange Cove, Parlier, Piedra, Reedley, Sanger, Selma, Shaver
Lake, Caruthers, Easton, Firebaugh, Teague, Biola, Kerman, Laton,
Mendota, Riverdale, San Joaquin and Tranquillity. Notes: The list
established from this recruitment may be used to fill both full and
part-time position(s). Working hours will vary between 8:00 a.m. to 9:00
p.m. Applicants must be willing to work various shifts including evening
and weekends (including Sundays), and able and willing to work at
various branch libraries as needed. Part-time positions may be a maximum
of 20 hours per week. The eligible list established from this
recruitment may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently
allocated positions. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may
be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as
authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules. Positions in this
classification are in Medical Group II - Moderate Physical Activity
(Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require moderate
physical effort using arms, legs, back, and trunk in frequent lifting,
pushing or pulling of objects weighing (or offering resistance
equivalent to) 10-25 pounds, and occasionally over 25 pounds. Generally,
bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing
and walking are involved. Eligible candidates must be able to perform
the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable

classification. * Provides services to customers and professional
librarians, which includes assisting in locating and selecting books and
materials, and in the use of computers and other library equipment. *
Locates and processes online requests for library materials. * Provides
direct customer service explaining library policies, procedures, and the
use of the online catalog. * Checks library materials in and out.
Collects fine monies and maintains records of money received. *
Processes books and other materials for circulation. * Prepares reports
and keeps records on a variety of library activities such as
circulation, reference questions, and requested materials. * Maintains
library collections; mends, cleans and shelves materials; and updates
online catalog and other indexes. * Assists in the maintenance of
library exhibits including bulletin boards and window displays. *
Operates a variety of office equipment. * May be in charge of a small
branch facility including overseeing Library Aides and temporary
personnel. * May be required to drive a County bookmobile on an
established route and provide a variety of library services to customers
from the bookmobile. Ensures vehicle receives scheduled maintenance and
reports potential mechanical problems to garage mechanics. * May
translate to serve public needs. Translating may be oral or in written
form. * May train staff in work processes and procedures including
volunteers. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: * General
library services, organization, and functions; * Basic public desk
etiquette and principles and techniques of effective customer service; *
Standard office practices and procedures, including the use of automated
and manual office equipment; * Established alphabetical and numerical
library filing/classification systems; * Common reference materials and
research methods; * Common literature and/or literature types and
genres. Skills/Abilities to: * Exercise interpersonal sensitivity with
people of various educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all
organizational levels, as well as with other agencies and the public; *
Interpret, explain, and apply library policies and procedures including
the Library's Rules of Conduct; * Communicate effectively, both orally
and in writing; * Organize and prioritize duties and tasks; * Utilize
available computer hardware and software in the daily performance of
duties and responsibilities; * Demonstrate and maintain a high degree of
initiative, maturity, integrity, and good judgment. Minimum
Qualifications: Experience: One (1) year of full-time, paid public
contact work experience involving some clerical work. OR Education:
Completion of thirty (30) semester units of coursework that is
acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university
system. Licenses: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or
equivalent, may be required. Possession of a valid Class "B" driver's
