In this position, you will be responsible for the planning, execution and completion of research and analyses that require a wide variety of economic expertise. WHAT IS THE LARGE BUSINESS AND INTERNATIONALDIVISION:The Large Business and International (LB&I) business unit provides service and enforcement activities to support tax compliance of businesses and related entities with assets of $10 million or more, as well as small U.S. businesses engaged in international, U.S. citizens abroad, and foreign persons and businesses with a U.S. tax requirement. As our name suggests, international tax administration is an important part of what we do in LB&I. As part of the LB&I team, you may be assigned to work in one of the following Practice Area segments: Treaty and Transfer Pricing, Pass Through Entities, Enterprise Activities, Cross Border Activities, Withholding & International Individual Compliance, Eastern Compliance, Northeastern Compliance, Central Compliance or Western Compliance. Eighth Street, Austin TX -Responsibilities As a Economist you will: -Research and analyze complex tax transactions that cover a wide range of industries. -Conduct microeconomic research to understand economic structure, business practices and functions, competitive conditions, trade barriers, government imposed barriers, financial markets, interest rates, technology transfers, and product life cycles. -Review economic, statistical and tax data to determine the existence of a potential economic issue. -Conduct research in source materials that include databases, professional journals, government publications, and studies by other economists. Research also includes interviews of key personnel in the taxpayer's organization, and other IRS experts. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: You must have a Four (4) year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus. OR A combination of education and experience. The education must include courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. To be qualifying your experience must be sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the following: -Conduct independent economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation. -Supervise or coordinate project assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information.OR -Teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and one of the following; (1) personal research that produced evidence of results; (2) direction of graduate theses in economics; or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.In addition to the above, you must meet the requirements described below: GS-13: Experience with microeconomic concepts applied to industry and businesses; analysis of functions performed, tangible and intangible assets utilized, risks borne, types products produced and pricing, comparative and competitive advantages, market structures and pricing power, geographic and trade risk, useful life of assets, opportunity costs, regulatory risks, intangible development risks, market risks, international competitive risks; experience analyzing economic, financial and statistical information to recognize and evaluate significant and critical factors, solve problems, draw rational economic conclusions, and prepare comprehensive reports; oral communications to explain and defend research findings; hold conferences with taxpayers and their representatives and maintain professional relationships.
