    Job Description

    Position Summary

    This is professional legal work supporting a judge of the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania __ in the Family Court Domestic Relations Division. Work involves providing the judge with assistance in legal research, in the review and preparation of cases, and in drafting orders and opinions, and similar material.

    All law clerks employed by judges of the courts of the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania are prohibited from appearing as counsel in the division/section of the court in which the judge by whom they are employed serves. Also, all law clerks are prohibited from engaging in any partisan political activity.

    Essential Functions

    ** The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all- inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.**

    • Review pleadings and procedural history.
    • Research legal sources, including statutory and decisional law, for preparation of orders and opinions.
    • Search for and study legal records, documents, files and case correspondence for applicable data.
    • Prepare rough drafts of orders and opinions.
    • Maintain file on case documents and all related correspondence.
    • Perform related work as required.
    • Supervision of student interns.

    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION:

    Standard courtroom and clerical office conditions.

    Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Considerable knowledge of the components and functions of the justice system.
    • Knowledge of the techniques and processes of legal research.
    • Ability to prepare for judicial approval notices, orders, and opinions.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the judiciary, court personnel, departmental administrators, attorneys, and associates.
    • Ability to use Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw, Microsoft Word and Excel.
    • Ability to perform administrative tasks in an effective and organized fashion.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Graduate of an accredited law school.
    2. Membership of the Bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania is not a requirement for Law Clerk 1; however, a current member of the Bar must be, and remain, in good standing.
    3. Three years of experience as a law clerk or practicing attorney, preferred.
    4. Strong academic background.
    5. Superior organizational, analytical, communication and writing skills.
    6. Interest in Family Law preferred.
    7. Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation.
    8. Covid-19 vaccination recommended.
    9. On site (not remote) position.

    Salary Range: $59,177 - $65,104
