OVERVIEW: King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) is tasked with ensuring safe, environmentally friendly products made from an urban renewable waste stream are beneficially used. Products include recycled water, Loop® biosolids soil amendment, and renewable energy. WTD's produces recycled water 24 hours, 7 days a week during the growing season (Apr-Oct). WTD Operations staff are responsible for reliable recycled water production and distribution to our customers and ensuring high customer service. JOB SUMMARY: This position will focus on the operation of Carnation's treatment plant. The responsibilities of this classification include, but are not limited to on-site operating, monitoring and maintaining equipment, systems, facilities, process control and utilizing remote monitoring technology. The Operator/SR Operator responsibilities of this recruitment include serving in a primary operator capacity. The incumbent will be a primary contact (SME) for Operations at the facility and assume any incident command emergency situations working closely with the Supervisor. WORK SCHEDULE: The treatment plants are operated 24/7. Applicants must be available to work any and all assigned shift schedules. Candidates can be assigned to any shift per business needs. WTD strives to provide equitable services to residents and businesses across King County. Job Duties Operate, monitor and maintain wastewater and odor control equipment and facilities. Operate, monitor and maintain biological, chemical, mechanical and hydraulic processes at wastewater treatment plant and associated facilities. Conduct sampling and test analysis of wastewater and recommend changes to process to meet federal and Washington State permits and regulations and to optimize wastewater plant performance. SME train others on site-specific areas or plant systems through on the job training. Perform maintenance on wastewater treatment plant and associated facilities, including buildings equipment, and grounds. Duties include cleaning, servicing operating equipment, mowing lawns and performing housekeeping tasks. Communicate with the public, construction personnel, consultants and engineers to resolve complaints or challenges, provide construction assistance, give tours and carry out related duties. Exchange information on wastewater operations, maintenance, and processes with staff involved in process control, maintenance, facilities services, off-site facilities services, and other resources Operate, monitor and control wastewater equipment and systems using complex computer control systems. Writing HECP's updating O&M manuals and updating/as building engineering drawings for the facilities Record technical data and daily activities in associated logs Be available to work all shift schedules. Be on call to respond to unusual occurrences and serve as an incident command for emergencies Perform other duties as assigned Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, including preliminary, primary, secondary, digestion, gas handling systems, sludge handling, plant-wide air, water, electrical, instrumentation, hydraulic support systems and permitting Knowledge of collection systems, including pump stations, regulator stations and miscellaneous structures, and disinfection technology Knowledge of mechanical and electrical theory, cross connections and pumps Knowledge of wastewater terminology and process control Knowledge and application of Division-wide safety procedures, practices and Safety programs Knowledge of and skill in applying sampling, testing, laboratory procedures, lab certification, accreditation, sample collection, and testing Strong written and oral communications skills Basic mathematics, algebra and computer application skills Skill in reading, recording and interpreting instrumentation and control gauges and meters Skill in operating basic hand and power tools and specialized equipment Skill in operating complex computer control systems and identifying normal and abnormal operating conditions Skill in the interpretation and application of technical information from plant drawings, operations and maintenance manuals Skill in manually starting and stopping equipment, systems, and processes. Creating and using written procedures Skill in establishing and maintaining work relationships with diverse occupational groups Ability to safely work in permit-required confined spaces, climb in and out of tanks using fixed, portable ladders and confined space equipment, work around noxious odors, heat, and high noise levels Ability to primarily work independently and also as a team member LICENSING / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Washington State Group II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification issued from the Washington State Department of Ecology (Group III is highly desired) Valid Washington State Driver's License or out-of-state equivalent Wastewater Collection Certification - Highly Desired CPR and first aid certification can be achieved within the first six months of employment Supplemental Information SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION The position requires the ability to work all shift schedules, requires the ability to work independently and is required to report to work during adverse and inclement weather conditions. Incumbents perform field work at one or more wastewater treatment plant(s), Division facilities and are required to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, use stairways and ladders, enter permitted confined spaces and work from elevated spaces. There is exposure to biological and chemical hazards and noxious odors, participation in the respiratory program is mandatory.
