Forensic Scientist I - Firearm and Tool Mark Identification Unit shall
be directly accountable to the MNPD Crime Laboratory Forensic Scientist
Supervisor - Firearm and Tool Mark Identification Unit for laboratory
analyses and related duties. ***Must be willing and able to work
overtime, holidays, and weekends as needed. ***Extensive Background
Checks are performed on applicants for the Police Department.
The Metro Nashville Police Department is a 24/7/365 operation. Whether

Department. Typical Duties * Successfully completes formal training
program in forensic firearm and tool mark identification * Generates
detailed documentation of evidence, scientific testing, and formal
reports * Performs and documents examinations on firearms as to
operability, functionality, and safety mechanisms and tool mark related
evidence * Performs microscopic examination of fired ammunition
components to various submitted firearms * Performs muzzle to target
determinations * Performs IBIS entries, correlations, and confirmations
- Performs serial number restoration examinations * Conducts technical
and administrative reviews * Follows quality control and standard
operating procedures of the Unit * Provides expert witness testimony *
Assists Unit Supervisor with writing forensic procedures, quality
manual, and safety and security procedures * Represents the Unit when
requested at meetings, conferences, and seminars Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a natural science, forensic science,
criminalistics, criminal justice or a closely related field from an
accredited university. Valid Driver License. No Substitution
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are
encouraged to apply. Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All
employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State
of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of
employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan
Government. Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities *
Knowledge of forensic laboratory standards * Knowledge of elementary
principles, practices, and techniques of physics and chemistry *
Knowledge of the documentation of forensic evidence * Experience in
collecting and entering scientific data into databases, retrieving
results, confirming agreement and writing formal reports * Ability to
lift up to 50 pounds * Ability to perceive the full range of the color
