  • Responsibilities

    POSITION DESCRIPTION: 

    YouthBuild participants (Corpsmembers) engage in intensive training divided between the construction service site and the classroom earning a GED or High School Equivalency diploma. Corpsmembers develop construction skills while providing a minimum of 300 hours of service to their community by serving on affordable housing projects, setting and achieving further educational goals, and engaging in leadership development, civic engagement and college and career readiness activities. Tentative start date for the program is July 13th. 

    CORPSMEMBERS EARN: 

    • Biweekly stipend: July 2020-August 2020 earn $672 (before taxes) every two weeks for an average of 32 hours per week. September 2020-January 2020 earn $784 (before taxes) every two weeks for an average of 32 hours a week. Raises and bonuses may be granted based on performance. 
    • AmeriCorps Education Award: Earn a $1,289.95 education award upon successful completion of the term (300 hours of service). This award can be used to pay tuition for college, trade schools, or certificate programs.

     

    PROGRAM TIMELINE: 

    Corpsmembers will be enrolled in the YouthBuild Program until academic and placement goals are met (approximately 6 months). 

    • Corpsmembers will alternate between classroom (a combination of in-person and remote (online) activities) and service site weeks July 2020-January 2020. 
    • Monday-Thursday 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Friday 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Schedule may vary depending on projects. 
    • 12 months of placement and follow-up services upon program completion.

     

    CORPSMEMBERS SERVE: 

    • On Construction Sites: Serve on a crew with other young adults building low-income housing in the Denver Metro area. Corpsmembers will serve alongside construction staff and professional tradespeople to become familiar with construction tools, vocabulary, and methods. 
    • Community: Corpsmembers will participate in service projects with local nonprofits that may be outside of the MHYC daily schedule.

     

    CORPSMEMBERS RECEIVE: 

    • Education: Fully participate in GED or High School Equivalency program, as well as construction lab classes, healthy lifestyles workshops, leadership development, and service-learning activities. 
    • Trainings/Certifications: First Aid/CPR, OSHA, Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT), hands-on technical training related to all construction projects, green building and other advanced trainings as applicable. 
    • Career Readiness: Career exploration, resume development, and networking with employers, apprenticeship, and union opportunities. 
    • Post-Secondary/College Resources: Develop skills and explore options for college, including: FAFSA completion, financial aid and enrollment support, scheduled campus visits, preparation workshops, etc. 
    • Health Insurance: May be eligible for health insurance the 1st of the month after serving at MHYC for sixty days at 30+ hours a week. Members are responsible for a portion of their health insurance premium monthly.

     

    CORPSMEMBERS LEAD: 

    • Corpsmembers serve as role models and promote volunteerism and community service across the agency. 

    • Leadership Opportunities include serving on the Leadership Council, taking lead roles in the classroom and on the service site, and attending the Council of Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. Corpsmembers also have the opportunity to provide direct programmatic input.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Between the ages of 17 and 24. 
    • Eligible for enrollment in AmeriCorps as a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident. 
    • Desire to make a positive change in your life. 
    • Committed to earning a high school equivalency diploma. 
    • Desire to become involved in your community and increase your leadership skills. 
    • Physically capable of construction tasks, including, but not limited to: ability to lift 50 lbs., ability to serve 4- 8 hours per day outdoors in all weather conditions (e.g. sun, heat, wind, rain, cold, snow, etc.), squat, reach, crawl, and stand for long periods of time. 
    • Able to commit to the entire term of service. 
    • Able to be on time and maintain high levels of attendance. 
    • Actively participate as part of a team, show respect to others and have a positive attitude. 
    • Committed to developing professional skills for long-term success.

     

    REQUIREMENTS: 

    • This position has recurring access to vulnerable populations; therefore, applicants must complete a pre-service background check which includes fingerprinting. 
    • Pre-service drug screen required. Drug testing may be required during the term. If you have questions or concerns about this, please contact us. 
    • Must not engage in any prohibited activities listed in the AmeriCorps member service agreement and must follow MHYC's policies and guidelines. 
    • Must be able to provide proof of income qualification and other barrier documentation per grant requirements.
