Correctional Specialist I/II; Grade 19/22 (IPSA) Montgomery County Government 155 reviews - Rockville, MD $55,176 - $91,314 a year Position may be filled at the Correctional Specialist I, Grade 19 (entry level- $48,039-$79,285) or Correctional Specialist II, Grade 22 (full performance - $55,176-$91,314) This Correctional Specialist position is assigned to the Pre-Trial Services Division, Intervention Program for Substance Abusers (IPSA). The primary duties of this position is the management of IPSA defendants referred for diversion or community service monitoring by the Office of the State's Attorney. Additional responsibilities include managing a reduced caseload of ACS (Alternative Community Services) defendants, conducting office and court intake interviews, screening and review of defendant records for program eligibility, assessment of defendants for placement into substance abuse education or treatment and for appropriate community service to perform community service hours. The Correctional Specialist is also responsible for making referrals to appropriate community resources, monitoring of defendant progress, participation and compliance to include drug test results, completion of community service hours, participation in education or treatment and collection of program fees. Additional responsibilities include teaching a structured curriculum of drug education classes, individual, crisis, and milieu counseling, drug testing of offenders, data entry and maintaining case records, preparation of individual reports and memoranda to the State's Attorney's office, courts and other community stakeholders regarding client program status. This position requires strong oral and written communication skills. Working hours are as follows: Monday 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Prior to appointment, all applicants must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, medical examination and drug/alcohol screen. The individual selected for this position will be considered an "Essential Employee". Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave. Generally, the position is covered by the Employee's Retirement System, Group JK. If the successful candidate(s) is an internal employee, retirement plan coverage will be determined at the time the job offer is made. Selected candidate must successfully complete the Maryland Correctional Training Academy Entry-Level Program and possess a Certificate of successful completion within 12 months or hire. Must maintain and successfully complete addition State-mandated and Departmental Correctional training as required. Minimum Qualifications If filled as a Correctional Specialist I: Experience: One (1) year of full time satisfactory experience in community based corrections or in other human services work emphasizing treatment/counseling. Education : Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Equivalency: Excess education may be substituted for required experience, but excess experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's Degree, as the educational requirement is stipulated by the Maryland State Training Commission. If filled at the Correctional Specialist II: Experience : Two (2) years of full time satisfactory experience in community based corrections or in other human services work emphasizing treatment/counseling, one year of which must be equivalent to that of a Correctional Specialist I. Education : Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Equivalency : Excess education may be substituted for required experience, but excess experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's Degree, as the educational requirement is stipulated by the Maryland State Training Commission. CITIZENSHIP AND AGE: Individuals appointed to this position must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age on the date of appointment and be either a citizen of the United States or resident alien. Preferred Criteria The applications of those individuals meeting the minimum qualifications will be reviewed to determine the extent, relevancy of training, and experience in the following areas: 1. Experience providing case management services, counseling, and crisis intervention with a criminal justice involved population; 2. Experience identifying and addressing the needs of pretrial and sentenced custodial correctional population; 3. Experience and/or training in conducting intake interviews, substance abuse assessments and addictions counseling; 4. Experience facilitating group counseling sessions, program groups, workshops and classes; 5. Developing educational curriculum for substance abusers and; 6. Computer Applications.
