An employee in this class is responsible for accurately reading and recording customers water consumption. The incumbent starts and terminates water service accounts. Incumbent operates and reads electronic devices requiring some data entry of codes, conditions, and comments. Ordinarily, employees follow designated routes, receiving specific work instructions, and referring unusual questions to a superior for decision. Work includes occasional public contact in such matters as replying to requests, receiving complaints, and making simple investigations and communication on assignments. Accuracy of meter reading is subject to check by comparison with past reading. Minimum Qualification Requirements 1 year of experience in public contact related work or outdoor field work; or 1 year of post high school technical or college level courses; or An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. Additional Requirements Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Drivers License. Possess sufficient strength and agility to walk in excess of 10 miles per day and lift up to 75 lbs. repetitively. Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations. Highly Desirable Utility or Meter Reading experience Recent (within past 5 years) full time experience working outdoors. Knowledge of Pinellas County geography. Illustrative Tasks (These are examples and are not all inclusive.) To accurately read water, sewer & reclaimed meters for customer billing purposes. Frequently stoop, kneel and crouch to read meters and work in inclement weather conditions and emergency situations. Performs varied tests on County equipment to check for stuck meters, malfunctions, enter meter readings, analyze malfunction and enter meter reading codes and notes into a handheld electronic device. Report leaks, broken seals, hazardous/broken meter box lids, illegal water usage, damage, safety hazards, and verify meter numbers to properties, re-sequence new accounts and check high/low water consumption's. Responds to customer's inquiries when necessary or direct them to call the phone center. Assist in the training of new employees. Follow safety guidelines while performing assigned duties and while driving in a county vehicle. Frequently need to see nearby items clearly such as when reading meters.
