Recruitment Range: $36,677-$62,091 Salary Grade: GN09 The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provide services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2000 employees. This position is located in the Food & Drug Protection Division. The Food & Drug Protection Division has five functioning sections, including the Food Section, the Dairy Section, the Feed Section, the Drug Section, and the Administrative Services Section. In addition, analytical support is provided to the Food & Feed Sections by the Food & Drug Protection Division's six laboratory branches, i.e. Feed Laboratory, Fertilizer Laboratory, Food Laboratory, Microbiology Laboratory, Residue Laboratory, and Pesticide Formulations Laboratory. The Division protects the health, welfare, and economic interests of consumers of foods, drugs, livestock feeds, fertilizers, and medical devices by ensuring, thorough inspections and analysis, that these products are wholesome and properly labeled. The primary purpose of this position is microbiological analysis of food, feed, meat, and poultry samples. These analyses require proficiency in traditional and molecular microbiological techniques, including microbial culture, interpretation of growth on differential and selective media, immunoassay, polymerase chain reaction, serology, immunomagnetic separation, and biochemical identification. The employee in this position is responsible for understanding and executing standardized microbiology protocols with accuracy, using sophisticated instrumentation, and interpreting results of complex analyses. The employee ensures that all testing and documentation conform to the laboratory's Quality Management System (QMS) and ISO 17025, government, and customer requirements. The employee also reviews data and monitors performance of quality controls. The employee also performs quality control and laboratory support tasks to maintain laboratory readiness for routine, non-routine, and emergency testing, maintain ISO 17025 accreditation, and ensure a safe work environment. These tasks include, but are not limited to, maintaining equipment, environmental monitoring, monitoring laboratory supplies and reagents, preparing media, performing quality control testing on media, verifying instrument performance, and maintaining stock cultures. Work includes other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Experience culturing and identifying bacteria. Ability to understand the principles of microbiology and molecular techniques. Ability to independently and accurately perform standardized complex tests under stringent time restrictions and accurately document work. Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions. Ability to apply organizational skills and high level of attention to detail. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor's degree in microbiology, food science or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
