  • Responsibilities

    Job Description

    Under supervision, the Custodian performs routine manual cleaning tasks in the library buildings, other facilities and surrounding areas.

    _ Essential Duties and Responsibilities:_

    • Performing routine cleaning tasks of restrooms, offices, and maintaining the interior and exterior of Library buildings such as sidewalks and ramps
    • Operating the following equipment: scrubber, buffer, wax applicator, carpet cleaner, pressure washer, and other electrical, gas, and manual operated appliances and equipment
    • Removing disposable waste materials from premises
    • Routinely recycles discarded paper
    • Assisting in moving and arranging of furniture and equipment as needed
    • Washing interior glass, wall partitions, and interior and exterior windows
    • Caring for custodial tools, equipment, and supplies; securing buildings
    • Performing other job-related duties as required.

    ** Desired Qualifications:**

    • Ability to use private vehicle to drive to assignments at various Branch locations (Employees are compensated for use of their private vehicles at a rate per mile set by the Controller’s Office.)
    • Flexibility and adaptability to change
    • Effectively communicate with supervisors, co-workers and patrons
    • Ability to use a computer to collect and write emails
    • Experience using industrial floor scrubbers and heavy duty vacuum cleaners
    • Experience cleaning and disinfecting restrooms while replenishing essential sanitary supplies
    • Experience operating electrical appliances such as floor buffers and waxers
    • Experience maintaining cleanliness standards in high traffic public commercial buildings

    _ Minimum Qualifications:_

    Verification of completed or current enrollment in a custodial training course equivalent to the City College of San Francisco Custodial Training program at the time of application. Candidates who are enrolled in a custodial training course at the time of application must submit verification of having completed the course (e.g., a copy of their certificate), prior to appointment. Candidates will remain under waiver until such time that verification is provided;

    OR

    Six (6) months (1040 hours) verifiable paid full-time custodial or janitorial experience at a commercial building (such as an office building, warehouse, retail or wholesale store, or non-profit agency or a commercial facility (such as a university, hospital stadium, auditorium, hotel/motel, etc.).

    AND

    Possession of Valid California Class C Driver's License.

    Verification of qualifying experience, when requested, must be documented on the employer's business letterhead and must include the name of the applicant, job title(s), dates of employment, description of job duties performed, and signature of the employer or the employer’s authorized representative. Experience claimed in self-employment will only be accepted if supported by documents verifying income, earnings, business license and experience comparable to minimum qualifications above. Copies of income tax papers or other documents listing occupation and total earnings must be submitted. Employees of the City and County of San Francisco may submit performance evaluations showing duties performed to verify qualifying City experience. City employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which appointed. Credit for experience obtained outside of the employee's class will be allowed only if recorded in accordance with the provisions of Civil Service Commission Rules. Verification may be waived if impossible to obtain. The applicant must submit a signed statement explaining why verification cannot be obtained. Waiver requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Failure to provide the required verification, or request for waiver when requested may result in rejection of the application.

    Selection Procedures: The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited to participate in the oral/performance interview.
