Work involves job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental, transportation operations-related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Work requires some contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. NOTE: All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development program. Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program ( EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment. -Duties -Engineering Assistant I The essential duties for this job include: -Assists in performing construction inspections. -Assists in performing design computations and plan preparations activities. -Assists in research and problem solving of engineering-related problems. -Drives to and learns to perform survey activities. -Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training and continuing education. -Prepares routine plan sheets for construction projects. -Uses automated roadway/structural or hydraulic design programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems. Engineering Assistant II The essential duties for this job include: -Assists in creating plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E). -Performs design computations and plan preparations to include preparing plan sheets for construction projects. -Performs engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work. -Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, evaluations and analysis activities. -Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation. -assists in performing construction inspections. -Assists in performing material sampling and testing. -Drives to and assist in survey activities. -Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training and continuing education. -Competencies -Engineering Assistant I The required competencies for this job include: -Communicate effectively. -Transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals. -Computer-aided drafting and design systems. -Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations. -Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals. -Maintaining a safe working relationship. Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program ( EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment. Failure to comply with all terms of the Program Agreement will result in reclassification. -Degree in engineering which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET). -Degree in engineering technology which has been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) plus two (2) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. -Degree in mathematical, physical or engineering science plus two (2) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. -Degree in engineering which has not been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) plus two (2) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. -This is a Safety Impact position (either Safety Impact, Commercial Driver and/or Vessel Crew Member) and will be subject to random drug testing. -Conditions of Employment -Conditions for this Position:Standards of Employment -Remarks -Resumes are accepted for additional information, but you must complete the online State of Texas application to include a summary of your work experience.
