    Steam and Sprinkler Fitter Job ID: 31772 Department: Human Resources Location: Various NY/NJ Facilities Responsibilities The Steam and Sprinkler Fitter performs journey level work relating to installing, maintaining, and repairing low and high pressure steam and sprinkler systems. Steam and Sprinkler Fitters will serve in a lead capacity over semi-skilled level staff and are responsible with inspecting, troubleshooting and overhauling sprinkler, standpipe, fire protection and associated auxiliary equipment (i.e. pumps, valves, boilers, etc.). This may include, but not limited to: Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair, according to requirements: * Measure, cut, thread and bend piping * Install support valves, piping and control systems * Install sprinkler heads and alarm systems * Remove and replace worn components * Read and interpret work specifications and fire codes

    • Test systems for leaks using air or liquid pressure equipment The Port Authority is a 24-hour, 7 days-a-week operation. Steam and Sprinkler Fitters work a 40-hour week, which may include nights, holidays, and responding to emergencies during off hours. Steam and Sprinkler Fitters work at our various Port Authority facilities throughout the New York and New Jersey area. Qualifications Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position: * High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution is required. * Three years full-time paid work experience in the Mechanical, Plumbing, and HVAC fields. * Valid Driver's License. Note: Applicants must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the Air Brakes endorsement or higher. Applicants without a Class B CDL must obtain a Class B CDL Permit with endorsement before their first day of work, and will be required to obtain a Class B CDL with one endorsement within three months of employment. Applicants should refer to the following websites for further information on obtaining a CDL and medical clearance for CDL Licensing: http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Commercial/CommercialDriver.htm OR http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/cdl.htm Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam designed to measure a candidate's knowledge in the following areas: * Tools & Equipment * Pipes & Pipe Fittings * Water Distribution Systems * Fire Hydrants * Equipment Troubleshooting & Repair * Wet Pipe Sprinkler Component Identification * Steam Unit Heaters * Sprinkler, Standpipe & Fire Protection Systems Successful written-test candidates will be invited to participate in a hands-on practical exam to demonstrate professional trade practices for this job title. The performance test will measure the candidate's ability to: * Climb and Work at Heights * Restore A Tripped Dry Pipe Valve * Identify & Service Steam Traps * Tie Basic Knots Used in Rigging & Hoisting * Assemble and/or Repair Fire Hydrants
    • Read Meters * Complete A Pipe Construction Project * Conduct Hydrostatic Testing * To Read and Interpret Sketches Note: The exam is administered on the Port Authority's behalf by CPS HR Consulting (CPS), a leader in computer-based testing. Applicants invited for testing will receive an email invite from CPS "XX@cpshr.us". The email from CPS will provide detailed instructions on how to schedule the exam and directions where to report for the exam.
