This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and future vacancies. The anticipated life of the list is six months Salary Information: Level I: $2,726 - $3,323 Level II: $3,314 - $4,039 Typical Duties: Respond to complaints of straying or marauding dogs and collect them as necessary; deliver all animals collected, on a daily basis, to the shelter and segregate those which have bitten a person or exhibits signs of rabies or other suspected diseases; transport sick or injured animals to the designated contract veterinarian or emergency veterinarian service or humanely euthanize when necessary; investigate reported inhumane treatment of animals; receive, feed and care for animals in the shelter; dispose of animals impounded only when necessary; assist the public in claiming and adopting animals; respond to complaints from the public concerning animals and take appropriate action; transmit all license fees and penalties collected to the appropriately designated person and location; canvas neighborhoods for unlicensed dogs in the County area and issue notices for compliance with the County ordinance; keep the shelter and animal control trucks clean and sanitary; may use automated office equipment. Employment Standards: Education/Experience: A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and one year of experience in the handling, capture, control, care and humane euthanasia of animals. Possession of a valid PC832 Certificate including the firearms course. In addition Level II requires: Possession a valid California Euthanasia Certificate and a valid certification as an Animal Control Officer or State Humane Officer in the State of California. Knowledge of: County and State ordinances and laws relating to the care, treatment and impounding of animals; humane and safe procedure for animal euthanasia; provisions relating to the collection and deposit of dog license receipts and penalties; care and feeding of various breeds of dogs and animals, and the common diseases of animals and their symptoms. Skill/Ability to: Capture, control and transport a variety of animals; follow oral and written directions; prioritize, organize, and carry out work assignments; operate with safety and accuracy small caliber firearms; be flexible in changing workloads and emergency situations; work cooperatively and effectively with fellow employees and the general public; promote good public relations; drive a light truck safely and in accordance with Motor Vehicle Codes and Laws; lift, drag or carry weights up to 100 pounds; write and print clearly, uniformly and legibly. LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license; completion of a certified Penal Code 832 course in arrest and firearms is required within six months of employment; complete and pass the department's Human Euthanasia Training program pursuant to Section 2039, Title 16, California Code of Regulations, within six months of employment. DESIREABLE EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS License or Certificate: Completion of a certified Penal Code 832 course in arrest and firearms is desirable at the time of employment. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must be immunized against rabies and maintain immunity for duration of employment. Additional Information: Conditions of Employment Candidates selected will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Additionally, a background investigation may also be conducted. Some job classes may also require a physical exam.
