    Job Description

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The United Nations Foundation was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner's historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities. The United Nations Foundation connects people, ideas, and resources to the United Nations to help strengthen the UN and its ability to advance human dignity and well-being on a thriving planet.  The Foundation champions multilateral cooperation and the UN system, and serves its mission by accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate action, mobilizing diverse constituencies for global change, nurturing a strong U.S.-UN relationship, and supporting the UN and its leadership.    The Fellow role serves in a communications support role to enable strong external and internal information sharing and creative storytelling to advance UNF and our partners’ global health work and policy objectives.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Support and facilitate strong global health communications for the UN Foundation including, inter alia:
      • Work under the direction of the Senior Advocacy and Communications Manager, Global Health to manage UNF’s internal and external global health communications.
      • Work with other Global Health, Public Affairs, and other health-related campaigns/alliances team members
      • Support planning and execution of global health initiative communications plans, including:
        • The COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund
        • The Unite for Health campaign
        • Health-related social media content creation across multiple social media platforms
        • Develop content for UNF blogs and other storytelling opportunities
        • Design graphics, videos, or other visual content as needed
      • Monitor and share relevant updates and communications surrounding WHO’s coordination and leadership on global health issues, including COVID-19
    • Support and facilitate UNF’s communications work around major global health moments and observance days, including:
      • World Immunization Week
      • World Health Worker Week
      • World Malaria Day
      • World Health Assembly
    • Provide research and writing support to Global Health team, including briefing papers, executive summaries, analyses, and presentations on above topics, or others as assigned.
    • Prepare for a final presentation on projects worked on/completed during the fellowship.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    SELECTION CRITERIA

    • Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a graduate degree program or have recently graduated from a graduate or undergraduate degree program.
    • Degree in communications, international affairs, public health, or related, relevant field strongly preferred.
    • Passion, knowledge or work experience in global health and development issues.
    • Communications experience required.
    • Familiarity with the United Nations desired.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills required, including the ability to analyze and translate or distill complex scientific and policy issues into memos, reports, or blog posts.
    • Design experience or ability to use Adobe Creative Suites, Canva, or other design software preferred.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse partners; ability to operate collaboratively and communicating clearly, often under time pressure, and with discretion, tact, diplomacy, cultural sensitivity and empathy.
    • Ability to take initiative; the ideal candidate will be a self-starter who is comfortable carrying out multiple tasks on different projects and assignments, is dependable and consistent, enjoys being part of a team and anticipates team needs.
    • Strong research skills.
    • Some experience with event logistics preferred.
    • Advanced experience in Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
    • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
    • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
    • Must be available to work part-time, up to 29 hours/week for a 4-6-month period.
    • Must have a personal laptop computer and access to the Internet.
