The Institute is headquartered in Washington DC with staff working in 22 different countries, at any given time up to 20% of the staff could be deployed working in the field. JOB BRIEF The research assistant will support the overall strategy of the Gender Policy and Strategy team with an emphasis on the teams external thought leadership efforts. The position will work with the GPS team to foster new strategic partnerships and maintain current relationships in order to disseminate and publicize USIPs work on the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, prevention of sexual violence, and promotion of peaceful masculinities. As a key function, the research assistant will oversee the work of the U.S. Civil Society Working Group on Women, Peace and Security*, of which USIP is the secretariat. This position will be supervised by the teams Senior Gender Specialist. Pay: Between $13.25-14 per hour Work Schedule: An average of 20 hours per week; up to 40 hours when school is not in session RESPONSIBILITIES GPS Program Support: * Support the Gender Policy and Strategy team in its commitment to addressing gender as an overarching lens for the Institutes work rather than a single sector or program. * Assist in the development of agendas, identification of participants and drafting of invitations for meetings, interviews, working sessions and public events on gender and peacebuilding issues. * Serve as the point of contact for U.S. CSWG engagement with the U.S. government, civil society and think tanks. * Support the U.S. CSWG to identify and track projects, partners, contacts, and opportunities that advance the goals of the Women, Peace and Security Act and National Action Plan. * Contribute to and coordinate activities including, but not limited to, scheduling meetings with key stakeholders; preparing and drafting materials such as policy briefs, talking points, background research, and other publications, as needed. * Organizes membership and subcommittee meetings by drafting agendas, tracking RSVPs and taking meeting minutes. * Supports the U.S. CSWG secretariat in maintaining communication channels with the U.S. CSWG executive committee and U.S. CSWG member organizations. * Manages U.S. CSWG external communications including, but not limited to the U.S. CSWG webpage and social media accounts. Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS * Must be currently enrolled in a Masters program in international relations, gender studies, international peace and conflict resolution, sociology, anthropology or related field. Bachelors degree required. * A minimum of 1+ years of related experience is required. * Ability to translate and synthesize complex themes, ideas or data into compelling and accessible summaries or memos. * Excellent research, analytical and writing skills. * Experience with organizing, analyzing, and managing events and forums. USIP's Research Assistant program is administered through the Consortium of Universities in the Washington Metropolitan area. Any full-time university student in the Washington area is eligible for these openings.
