    Major Duties

    • Performs the full range of journeyman level tasks associated with the treatment, preparation, and painting of a variety of machine tools and industrial equipment (includes but not limited to lathes, mills, boring mills, drills, etc).
    • Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the paint preparation equipment which includes a bead blasting room and a high pressure washing facility.
    • Applies coating materials using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other means of application ensuring surfaces have smooth texture and decorative appearance as well as meet thickness and level requirements
    • Sets up, adjusts, and operates spray-painting equipment or other power painting equipment such as air assisted, airless, conventional and pressure fed air spray.
    • Ensures products meet protective requirements and work is in compliance with specifications, completed within specified time frames, and meets customer’s requirements.
    • Straightens, removes dents and creases, smoothes, fills, sands, and finishes damaged machine tool guards using such tools as dolly sets, hammers, grinders, and sanders.
    • Applies all types of primers and paints to such surfaces, which includes catalyst type paints, sealant, heat resistant paints, lacquers, enamels and other finishes.
    • Maintains and monitors the safety devices within the paint booth, bead blasting room and high pressure washing facility.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license and will be required to obtain and maintain a license for the operation of a forklift.

    Qualification Summary

    Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Painter without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Duties require stooping, standing, bending, kneeling as well as working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Hand and eye coordination is necessary when using spray gun, and when painting with brush. The incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally the employee may handle materials and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds and over. Working Conditions: Work is performed predominantly indoors, however incumbent is subject to exposure to paint fumes and normal industrial noises. Protective equipment and clothing such as safety glasses, gloves, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear are required, which are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Work is performed in and around heavy concentrations of chemicals that are known health hazards and are highly flammable. Spray painting is accomplished within approved spray facilities.
