    Major Duties

    • Preserves a limited variety of items such as vehicles, mechanical, and metal items, craft, and weapons against corrosion, deterioration, and similar damage.
    • Processes a limited variety of basic equipment utilizing techniques such as wiping, dipping, spraying, brushing, pumping, as well as applying oils, powders, desiccants, mists, drying agents, moisture absorbers, and similar agents.
    • Applies various preservatives to ensure protection of parts, surfaces, and equipment from corrosion and deterioration.
    • Performs limited assembly/disassembly of items to remove external parts for shipment/storage purposes, gain entry to easily accessible areas in which to apply or insert preservation material, or to facilitate the processing of disassembled parts.
    • Utilizes overhead cranes or fork lifts to assist in the movement or processing of materials to be preserved.

    Qualification Summary

    Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Preservation Servicer without more than normal supervision (SOE): I perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as. preserving a limited variety of items such as: vehicles, mechanical and metal items, craft, and weapons against corrosion, deterioration, and similar damage. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Employee lifts and handles items weighing up to 25 pounds and may occasionally handle items up to 60 pounds. Heavier items may require the assistance of mechanical devices or fellow employees. Employee typically will stand and work on concrete or asphalt for extended periods. Incumbent may be required to bend, stoop, reach, climb, or work in tiring positions. Working Conditions: Typically performs work inside in areas that are occasionally hot, cold, damp, or drafty, but may work outside. May be exposed to the following conditions: dangerous or irritating fumes or vapors, acids or caustic substances, dust, dirt, oil, grease, or similar materials which may soil hands or clothing, possibility of cuts and scrapes, and moderate noise. May require the use of protective equipment such as gloves, respirators, or aprons. Safety and Health Requirements: Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned, as directed by the supervisor. Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: eye, respiratory, foot protection, and protective clothing (gloves, apron, coveralls, etc.). Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials. Employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted, as necessary, when working near or around noise hazardous areas, machinery, or equipment.
