    Major Duties

    • Performs complex technical assignments relative to assigned area in the Hazardous Facility.
    • Reviews and processes customer requests for various shipments of hazardous, temperature sensitive, fragile, oversized, heavy haul, classified and urgent freight not covered by standing route orders.
    • Primarily works with hazardous materials and must have an extensive knowledge of all HAZMAT handling procedures, from receipt, stow, issue and transportation of material.
    • Applies an extensive knowledge of supply and classification systems along with other informational databases, technical manuals, Federal Logistics Data systems (FEDLOG), and be able to locate manufactures websites.
    • Comply with a multitude of international and host nation laws, government and non-government publications, regulatory and safety requirements for shipment of hazardous materials.
    • Certifies hazardous freight for shipment.

    Qualification Summary

    To qualify for a Transportation Assistant (Hazardous), your resume and supporting documentation must support: A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-07 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: - Assignments regularly involving the movement of oversized, heavy haul, hazardous, and security risk items. - Requires extensive practical familiarity of the carrier industry, specialized shipment needs, and terminal or storage capabilities to identify the appropriate shipping method, carrier equipment, services, and special handling required. - Use of automated transportation systems to reconcile errors that require an understanding of nonstandard transportation procedures, or to provide subject-matter assistance in the development of automated transportation procedures for clerical operations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands: Incumbent is routinely handling hazardous property. Work requires standing on hard surfaces maintaining balance for extended periods of time. Requires bending, stooping, reaching and twisting in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds. May lift greater weights with assistance. Incumbent must be able to shift/relocate other heavy materials using appropriate material handling equipment. Work Environment: Work is done inside and outside for long duration through breaks, etc., as necessary to complete immediate tasks. Inside work is performed in a warehouse. Outside work is subject to inclement weather. Discomfort is experienced while wearing protective clothing, respirators, goggles, or face masks. Worker may be exposed to hazardous vapors, liquids, powders and solids and the possibility of cuts and bruises. May be subject top hazards of working close to moving equipment, for example, forklifts, truck and conveyor lines.
