The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

We have an exciting opportunity for an intern to work closely with the Community Impact Team to assist in the implementation of a sustainable culture of health within the diverse & vulnerable communities in the Erie Market (Erie, Crawford, and Warren Counties). Individuals will obtain practical experience and receive hands-on training in various disciplines, to include volunteer recruitment/management, community event planning and management, public health research, community partner networking/connection, and program development/implementation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

• Time Commitment: 20 hours per week

• INTERNSHIP DURATION: 5/22/23 – 8/11/23

• HYBRID POSITION. MUST BE LOCATED IN ERIE, CRAWFORD, OR WARREN COUNTY.

• Position will include some home office and in community work.

• Salary: $23.00 per hour

INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

• Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment

• Opportunity to explore a career-path with a reputable voluntary health/service organization

• Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management

• Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others

TASKS:

• Assist in organizing/implementing community and culturally appropriate health initiatives and programs throughout communities.

• Support work around community impact priority issues including hypertension control, nutrition insecurity, community response, and tobacco/vaping.

• Assist with internal program evaluations.

• Assist community impact team in communicating the impact of local work.

• Identify impact stories for showcasing, enhance via research and interviews, and develop communication pieces for online or offline sharing.

• Create and manage a volunteer database and communications; respond to volunteer inquiries with upcoming opportunities.

• Identify, review, and develop resources that meet community health needs such as playbooks and other tools.

• Explore state or local organizations that align with AHA priority issue areas and identify opportunities for collaboration.

• Assist with the planning and implementation of trainings and other community impact meetings.

• Attend internal and external meetings as requested, including health fairs and community events as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Currently enrolled in a public/community health, health promotion/education, healthcare administration, or similar undergraduate or graduate program or recent graduate with interest in contributing toward a voluntary health organization.

• Demonstrated excellence in written communications skills, including writing on health topics for promotional or educational outcomes.

• Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.

• Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.

• Effective oral, written and presentation communication skills

• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.

• Ability to learn quickly, have focused attention to detail, and a reliable work schedule.

• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, plus virtual platform programs (Teams, Zoom.

• Ability/willingness to travel across the Erie Market for events, meetings, and program implementation; have a means of reliable transportation.

• MINIMUM AVAILABILITY OF 20 HRS/WK, M-F BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 8:30AM-5PM.

• MUST BE LEGALLY AUTHORIZED TO WORK IN THE UNITED STATES FOR ANY EMPLOYER WITHOUT SPONSORSHIP, NOW OR IN THE FUTURE. FOR ANY ROLES WORKING REMOTELY, THE WORK MUST ALSO BE PERFORMED INSIDE THE UNITED STATES, NOT IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY.
