    We're hiring an Intern, Community Health Rio Grande Valley. The intern will work closely with the Community Impact Director to assist in the implementation of a sustainable culture of health within the diverse & vulnerable communities in the Rio Grande Valley.

    Individuals will obtain practical experience and receive hands-on training in various disciplines.

    Students will improve their existing skills by learning strategies to improve health outcomes in diverse communities by conducting health education workshops, developing, and implementing outreach strategies to specific racial ethnic minority communities, and create culturally competent resources that can be utilized by these communities to prevent or manage cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke.

    Internship Overview:

    • Time Commitment: 20 hours per week
    • Internship Duration: 1/16/2024 – 5/3/2024
    • Remote work: Intern must be based in the Rio Grande Valley (McAllen, TX; Brownsville, TX; Mission, TX; Harlingen, TX; Edinburg, TX; San Juan, TX)
    • Salary: $23.00 per hour

    • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management.
    • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

    Responsibilities

    Tasks could include things like the following:

    • Support work around community impact priority issues including hypertension control, nutrition insecurity, community response, and tobacco/vaping.
    • Assist community impact team in communicating the impact of local work.
    • Understand the principles and practices of public health planning, research administration, and evaluation.
    • Deeper understanding of public health by increasing their awareness of cultural needs, and challenges of connecting resources to diverse populations.
    • Understand the benefits of strategic partnerships between health care professionals, businesses, and community-based organizations to improve population health.
    • Support clinical engagement, blood pressure program implementation, and help with nutrition access and advocacy campaign work, as needed.
    • Support Market implementation of hands-only CPR education through community-based events with staff and volunteers
    • Attend internal and external meetings as requested, including health fairs and community events as necessary.
    • Assist in organizing/implementing community and culturally appropriate health initiatives and programs throughout communities.
    • Assist with internal program evaluations.
    • Identify impact stories for showcasing, enhance via research and interviews, and develop communication pieces for online or offline sharing.
    • Create and manage a volunteer database and communications; respond to volunteer inquiries with upcoming opportunities.
    • Identify, review, and develop resources that meet community health needs such as playbooks and other tools.
    • Explore state or local organizations that align with The Association’s priority issue areas and identify opportunities for collaboration.
    • Assist with the planning and implementation of training and other community impact meetings.

    Qualifications

    • 2+ years educational or equivalent experience in health or public health courses with an interest or experience in public policy and political institutions.
    • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
    • Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.
    • Effective oral, written and presentation communication skills.
    • Bilingual in Spanish
    • Ability/willingness to travel across Rio Grande Valley for events and clinic visits; have a means of reliable transportation.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
    • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
    • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
    • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection, Reliable Transportation
