The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

Under close supervision and mentorship of experienced public health professionals, students will apply classroom learning to practical problems. Throughout this process, students will develop and strengthen health communication and community engagement skills.

The intern will enhance their existing skill set by learning strategies to improve health outcomes in diverse communities by supporting blood pressure control initiatives, nutrition security work, health education strategies, and creating culturally competent resources that can be utilized by communities to prevent or manage cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and stroke. The Utah-based intern will work under the local Salt Lake City Community Impact Director in a hybrid work environment.

Internship Overview:

• Time Commitment: 20 hours per week
• Internship Duration: 5/20/24 – 8/9/24
• Intern must be based in Salt Lake City, UT or the immediate surrounding area .
• Salary: $23.00 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

• Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment.
• Opportunity to explore a career path with a reputable voluntary health/service organization.
• Gain experience in the professional world while learning about board management.
• Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

• Assist Community Impact staff: implementing health equity priority programs, attending American Heart Association events, co-leading Hands-Only CPR training, assisting with Heart Healthy Presentations, and engaging with community partners via virtual calls and email.
• Assist with Community Impact meetings and recording minutes when meeting with internal staff and community partners.
• Interns will support PSE (Policy, Systems and Environmental Changes) events in the Utah Market.
• Interns will be asked to complete tasks such as but not limited to:
• Health fair attendance - distributing material and one on one education
• Health presentations -small to large groups as they gain experience
• Material and resource development such as PPT's, flyer, and brochures
• Special event support - preparing supplies, recruiting and managing volunteers, etc.
• Program implementation - recruiting and training program sites, follow up on participants, etc.
• Resource inventory - ordering supplies, organizing, etc.

Other duties as assigned by Community

Qualifications

• 2+ years of educational or equivalent experience in health or public health courses.
• Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
• Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion, with guidance from Community Impact Director.
• Effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
• Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
• Ability to work some weekends for health fair events or special AHA events.
• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in Canva, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
• Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection & Reliable transportation
• Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
